BATU PAHAT: The growth of outbound and inbound tourism has slowed down from the start of this year, said Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA).
Its deputy president John Tan Chai Keong said the downtrend was due to various factors, including the uncertain date of the 13th general election. “Many travellers, especially those from the Government sector, have opted not to travel for the time being,” he said after opening the Batu Pahat district-level MATTA Fair here on Saturday.
Tan said various activities had been carried out to attract travellers. He added that tour operators had placed a greater emphasis on domestic tourism as compared to before. In a related development, Tan urged consumers to buy travel insurance before they travel as it would protect them against unforeseen circumstances.
Although MATTA had made travel insurance compulsory for its 2,800 members beginning March, Tan said travellers could still purchase the insurance from its members or from other companies. MATTA Johor chapter chairman Kenny Ngi advised travellers to watch out for illegal tour operators. He added that the association had received a number of complaints from members of the public about tour agents who went missing after taking their money. He assured the public that MATTA fair exhibitors were legal tour operators.
