PUTRAJAYA: The skyline here burst into a vibrant display of lights as the 1Malaysia International Tourism Night Floral Parade received a royal kick-off by the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah.
Every night from now until next Sunday, 15 decorated boats will cruise along a 3km stretch of the Putrajaya Lake accompanied by music and lights from 8.30pm onwards. A five-minute fireworks display will cue the end of each night.
The event, organised by the Tourism Ministry, complements the Putrajaya Floria 2012 which exhibits some 400,000 flowers and plants. Admission to Floria starts from 9am to 10pm (Monday to Thursday) and 9am to midnight (Friday to Sunday). Admission is free.
“We are proud that the boats participating in this year's event had come from different states in Malaysia and also one each from Suzhou (China) and Kenya. “We had one million visitors to the Magic of the Night (the theme of the floral boat parade) last year and we are confident that we can achieve the same success this year,” Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said.
The boats participating in the event will vie for various prizes to be announced on the final night of the festival, including the best boat, the most creative and the most popular. Members of the public can cast their votes through the ministry's website or its Facebook page.
The flower and garden festival, themed “Bougainvillea Enduring Beauty”, is located at the Precinct Two waterfront. Putrajaya Corporation president Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said tropical, sub-tropical and temperate flowers and plants were being shown. “Among them are 100 bougainvillea cultivars at 80 garden designs presented by government agencies, corporations, floral associations and schools,” he said.
