Soori Penang makes TIME's 2026 list of World's Greatest Places

GEORGE TOWN: Soori Penang has been named by TIME, an American news magazine based in New York City, as one of the World's Greatest Places of 2026.

Every year, TIME gathers nominations for places - such as hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums and parks - from its global network of correspondents and contributors, as well as through an application process, focusing on those that offer fresh, exciting and meaningful experiences.

Soori, a 15-suite hotel, draws on its owner, SCDA Architects founding principal Soo K. Chan's early years living in a historic shophouse within the storied Khoo Kongsi compound here, translating those memories for today's travellers.

Unlike many heritage hotels which lean heavily on ornate Peranakan antiques, Soori takes a more thoughtful, contemporary approach.

According to the author, Kathryn Romeyn, from the outside, Soori blends seamlessly with its traditionally styled surroundings.

Inside, however, custom onyx lamps cast a gentle glow through once-shadowy interiors, while restored glazed light wells brighten tranquil water features — an homage to the monsoon rains Chan remembers filling the inner courtyards below.

A restrained palette allows form and texture to take centre stage, accented by subtle nods to Penang's multicultural heritage, such as shishi lion statues and circular stone-look windows inspired by those in the ornate clan house temple.

State Tourism Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, in congratulating Soori, said it was another proud moment for Penang.

"Soori Penang, the newly opened boutique hotel in George Town, has been selected for TIME's 2026 World's Greatest Places, a global list celebrating 100 remarkable destinations shaping the future of travel," he said.

"Having opened its doors in January 2026, the hotel brings together thoughtful design, heritage surroundings and modern hospitality right in the heart of Penang's Unesco World Heritage Site.

"A wonderful milestone that further strengthens Penang's reputation as a world-class destination," he added.

Tourism Malaysia Bolsters Visit Malaysia 2026 Through New Airasia Service From Batam To Kuala Lumpur

SEPANG —Tourism Malaysia is delighted to welcome the inaugural flight of AirAsia Malaysia, AK471, from Batam, Indonesia, which arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 today at 11.15 a.m. The arrival was officially received by representatives from Tourism Malaysia alongside partners from AirAsia and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The launch of this new route marks a significant milestone in strengthening connectivity between Indonesia’s emerging second-tier cities and Malaysia. This strategic expansion not only enhances AirAsia’s regional network but also serves as a vital platform to boost visitor arrivals from the Riau Archipelago. Indonesia remains one of Malaysia’s primary tourism markets, alongside other priority markets such as China, India, and Australia.

The inaugural flight carried 180 passengers, achieving a strong full load factor on the 180-seat capacity Airbus A320 on their first arrival. The passengers comprised a diverse mix of travellers, predominantly from Indonesia, along with visitors from other nations including China and Singapore. The route operates daily, with flights departing Kuala Lumpur for Batam at 8.05 a.m. and return flights departing Batam at 8.45 a.m. (WIB).

Welcoming this new chapter in regional connectivity, Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal bin Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, commended the aviation industry for its continued commitment to strengthening travel links.

“As we build momentum towards VM2026, every new flight route serves as a gateway to our collective success. Our partnership with the aviation industry reflects strong confidence in Malaysia’s tourism attractions. Improved accessibility remains a key component of our strategy to position Malaysia as a preferred destination for visitors from Southeast Asia,” he said.

“We are pleased to launch this new route connecting Batam and Kuala Lumpur, which further reinforces our commitment to enhancing regional connectivity between Indonesia and Malaysia. Batam is an important gateway within the Riau Islands, and this new service will provide affordable connectivity for both leisure and business travellers while supporting tourism growth in line with VM2026,” said Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, General Manager of AirAsia Malaysia.

In 2025, visitor arrivals from Indonesia to Malaysia reached 4.3 million representing a 2.9 per cent increase compared to 2024. Today’s launch of this new route is expected to further boost visitor arrivals to Malaysia throughout 2026. This new direct connection highlights the robust collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and the aviation sector. Both organisations remain committed to ensuring the success of the VM2026 campaign.

Malaysia expands halal tourism strategy into spa and wellness sector

Malaysia has taken a strategic step to extend its leadership in the global halal ecosystem into the spa and wellness sector, with the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC) and the Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA) at ITB Berlin.

The collaboration will see ITC roll out a structured Muslim-Friendly Spa Guideline and Training Programme to 100 AMSPA members through dedicated training modules, capacity-building programmes and a formal recognition framework.

A press release jointly issued by ITC and AMSPA stated: “The programme is conceived to introduce authentic Malaysian spa and wellness offerings to attract more tourists to Malaysia in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

“It also signals Malaysia’s intent to strengthen standards within the halal wellness segment while positioning the country as a reference point for destinations seeking to tap into the growing Muslim travel market.”

The MoU was signed by ITC director-general Mohammad Faisal Abu Suaib Khan and AMSPA president Selinastein Mohd Rashid. Minister of tourism, arts and culture Tiong King Sing witnessed the signing, signalling his support for the development of Muslim-friendly spa and wellness offerings.

ITC formulated the spa and wellness guidelines jointly with the Islamic Science University of Malaysia and AMSPA, benchmarking them against the SMIIC Halal Spa Standards adopted at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation level. It forms one of ITC’s key offerings under the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition programme, which also includes guidelines for Muslim-friendly tourist accommodation premises and travel operating businesses.

By introducing structured guidelines and training tailored specifically for spa operators, ITC aims to provide clear direction to the industry on service delivery and operational considerations. It also addresses privacy standards and guest experience enhancements that cater to Muslim travellers while remaining inclusive and commercially viable for the wider market.

Mohammad Faisal commented: “This collaboration marks an important milestone in strengthening Malaysia’s halal ecosystem through tourism.

“Wellness and spa services are part of the whole travel experience. By developing practical guidelines and training programmes, we are not only enhancing service quality but also building industry confidence in serving the Muslim market in a structured and professional manner.”

He said tourism plays a unique role within the halal economy as an integrator of multiple sectors.

“When travellers visit a destination, they engage with accommodation, retail, food services, financial services and wellness offerings. Ensuring that these components work cohesively strengthens the overall tourism experience,” he added.

Langkawi International Airport secures fifth consecutive ASQ win for Best Airport in Asia-Pacific

LANGKAWI: Langkawi International Airport (LGK) has been named the Best Airport in Asia-Pacific (2 to 5 million passengers) at the 2025 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards.

This marks the airport's fifth consecutive win in the same category.

The ASQ Awards, organised by the Airports Council International (ACI), are considered the global benchmark for airport customer experience as they are based entirely on real-time passenger feedback.

Surveys capture traveller experiences across key touchpoints, including efficiency, cleanliness, comfort, and overall service quality.

Malaysia Airports managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the milestone holds special significance as the nation prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

"This fifth consecutive recognition is a powerful endorsement from passengers themselves. It affirms the dedication of our airport community in Langkawi and reflects our commitment to delivering seamless, welcoming journeys at one of Malaysia's most iconic island destinations," he said in a statement.

He added that service excellence at key tourism gateways like LGK will be critical in shaping first and lasting impressions of the country as VM2026 gains momentum.

In 2025, LGK handled 2.9 million passenger movements, comprising 2.6 million domestic and 300,000 international travellers, supported by expanding connectivity and steady growth in international arrivals.

Mohd Izani noted that Malaysia Airports will continue investing in passenger comfort, digital enhancements, and collaborative initiatives with stakeholders to further elevate the travel experience.

As a consistent benchmark for service excellence in the region, LGK's achievement reinforces Malaysia's tourism appeal and its readiness to welcome global visitors for the upcoming tourism year.

i-City anchors new visitor economy

KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia intensifies its global push ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026, the country's tourism narrative is undergoing a structural transformation.

Iconic images of island sunsets and heritage streets still define its brand, but a new wave of attractions across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur is reshaping how the nation competes for international attention.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and immersive engineering, these attractions are shifting technology to centre stage — becoming the attraction itself — and increasingly, a driver of capital interest.

At i-City in the capital of Selangor, the AI World Experience Centre — developed in partnership with AgiBot — offers a glimpse into this future.

Currently the largest public showcase of its kind in the country, the centre features over a hundred lifelike humanoid robots capable of real-time interaction. The setting is deliberately accessible; families gather as children wave at machines that wave back, testing the natural communication of AI in a leisure environment.

Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man recently noted that these innovative centres are key to creating distinctive travel packages.

The scale of this differentiation is critical as the nation aims for a significant post-pandemic surge.

Chiew recently expressed high confidence in these targets, stating, "The momentum we are seeing gives us confidence that the 2026 target of over 40 million arrivals is achievable with continued collaboration across government and industry players.

"Official projections for Visit Malaysia 2026 place the target range between 35.6 million and 47 million visitors, generating between RM147.1 billion and RM329 billion in receipts.

"Yet the strategy goes beyond novelty. For developer I-Berhad, these projects are demand engines embedded within a larger master-planned ecosystem, where robotics-as-a-service and high-tech attractions help stimulate hospitality demand," he said.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts Asia Pacific president Ooi Joon Aun said Wyndham i-City was not just about hospitality — it was about showcasing what AI-powered living feels like.

He noted that global pilots have demonstrated the transformative potential of AI and robotics in redefining hospitality, adding that the partnership with i-City allowed for the delivery of "next-generation guest experiences in one of Malaysia's most innovative destinations".

Property consultant Sam Goh noted that integrated ecosystems combining attractions, technology and hospitality could reduce cyclical risk for developers while capturing both visitor spending and long-term asset appreciation.

"As experiential travel becomes a driver of destination choice, real estate projects that embed attractions, technology and hospitality elements are increasingly positioned to capture both visitor spending and long-term asset value growth," he said.

The Wyndham collaboration with i-City also spans to Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).

At Wyndham Suites KLCC, located minutes from the Petronas Twin Towers, guests can experience WynSnow — an indoor snow environment engineered within a tropical metropolis.

Behind this spectacle lies a sophisticated integration of climate-control systems and sensory design, illustrating how technical infrastructure can be repurposed into an experiential tourism asset.

Wyndham Suites KLCC operates under a hybrid hospitality-residential model, allowing buyers to occupy units, retain them as secondary homes, or participate in a professionally managed hotel rental programme.

Malaysia raih 'dividen keamanan' sektor pelancongan - Penganalisis

Recognising the shift from traditional guidebooks to digital-first discovery, Grab is turning data into discovery with the launch of 5-Star Eats, Malaysia’s In-app Food Guide.
