KOTA KINABALU: The travel industry is hoping to generate sales of between RM15 million and RM20 million at the upcoming Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) Fair Sabah, which is making a return after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It will be held on July 9 to 10 at the ITCC shopping mall in Penampang.

Its organising chairman Alicia Gomes said many people are eagerly waiting to travel now following the reopening of international borders and relaxation of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for travelers.

Among the popular destinations include China, Australia, Turkey and Dubai as well as pilgrimage tours, she told the media during a press conference at the Matta Sabah Chapter office, here today.

Also present were MASwings commercial support manager Aznah Marsha Omar and Malaysia Airlines Bhd commercial sales for Sabah and Labuan head, Mahzan Mat Salleh.

"Prior to Covid-19, sales generated from the fair had always been around RM25 million. We expect it to be around RM15 to RM20 million this time around," said Gomes.

Matta Sabah chairman Lawrence Chin said visitors will have the opportunity to buy from a wide variety of value-for-money domestic and international holiday packages from over 80 participating companies.

The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) will be the official airlines for the fair and they will be giving away 24 tickets for the buyers' contest.

Lucky winners will stand a chance to win tickets to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Denpasar, courtesy of Malaysia Airlines Bhd while Firefly is sponsoring a flight to Penang.

Chin believes with the collaboration and support from MAG together with Firefly and MASwings, it will be a crowd-puller to further boost and revive the international and domestic tourism industry.

He said visitors planning to visit the fair must comply with the SOP by wearing face masks at all times in the mall.

Admission is free. The fair will be held from 9am to 7pm over the two days.

Tourism Malaysia Signs MOC With Emirates To Increase Air Connectivity

DUBAI, 10 May 2022 – Tourism Malaysia has signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MOC) with Emirates today at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2022 that is held at Dubai World Trade Centre from 9th to 12th May.

Working as strategic partners to boost the tourism recovery, Tourism Malaysia will work together with Emirates, one of the world’s leading airlines, to increase air connectivity through a number of flights and flight capacity to Malaysia, from major destinations beyond Dubai and across the globe.

Nancy Shukri, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said: “This collaboration will give a further boost to the tourism industry and strengthen economic ties between Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. We hope Emirates will continue to work together with Tourism Malaysia to promote Malaysia as a unique travel destination focusing solely on Malaysia by highlighting different cities such as Kota Kinabalu and Penang. This collaboration also aims to attract potential tourists from other markets such as Europe, America, and Africa via Emirates’ network and services”.

This collaboration will explore mutually beneficial initiatives that will drive inbound tourism to Malaysia, and also offers Emirates more opportunities to serve the market. More joint activities are mapped out to drive the tourism recovery through familiarisation trips, workshops, seminars, digital campaigns, in-flight marketing campaigns, and other marketing programmes.

Following the reopening of Malaysia’s international borders on 1st April 2022, through this collaboration, Emirates is expected to expand its wings to other cities in Malaysia as well as promote some of the country’s latest attractions and destinations for shopping, family fun, eco-adventure, honeymoon, and luxury holidays.

Sabah wants to penetrate Middle East tourism market

DUBAI: The Sabah Tourism Board along with five local travel agents are promoting Sabah as a preferred destination in an effort to penetrate the Middle Eastern market.

The tourism key players have met with potential buyers during a business to business (B2B) session yesterday to showcase Sabah as one of Malaysia's hidden gems at the 2022 Arabian Travel Market at a hotel here.

The engagement session was organised by the Solidarity Association For Travel and Tours Agency Malaysia (SAFTTA).

Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman said the Middle East is Sabah's emerging market, hence the B2B session is timely and necessary now that travel activities are returning to normal.

"Sabah can be an eye-opening destination for our Middle Eastern visitors, from its friendly people and rich culture to its breathtaking nature, wildlife, and cuisine. We have a wide variety of unique experiences for tourists to choose from.

"We, at Sabah Tourism Board, have consistently maintained our commitment and aggressiveness in promoting tourism activities and products to the foreign market, especially during the pandemic.

"We anticipate an influx of Middle Eastern tourists to Malaysia and to the state. We hope that this will boost our tourism industry even more. All stakeholders must work together to achieve this," she said.

The five local travel agents participating in the SAFTTA B2B session were Fun Holiday Tours and Travel, Borneo Wakid Adventures, i-world Travel and Tours, Exotic Asian Explorer (Borneo) and AiTravel.

According to Fun Holiday's managing director Connie Chong, Middle Eastern travelers visiting Malaysia are not necessarily looking to shop so much, and many of them are drawn to the country's climate, culture, and food.

"The SAFTTA B2B aims to promote Malaysia tourism products and provide more destination information to all trade partners and tourism industry players. As agents, we need to be aggressive in promoting our state's uniqueness to them such as the Danum Valley, Kundasang highland, islands, the local cultures, and many more.

"Flight connectivity is not a major problem for Sabah. So, we will continue to play our role in promoting Sabah as a new travel destination," said Chong, who helped to organise the engagement session.

Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Brunei are currently the easiest gateways to Sabah from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Kuala Lumpur - Kota Kinabalu and Singapore - Kota Kinabalu routes are well connected by air, with several airlines now operating between the cities.

The Arabian Travel Market is among the leading platforms for the tourism and travel industries, allowing professionals to showcase their brand and discover new market prospects.

Think City to boost cultural tourism

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's northern region is rich in history and has the potential to grow into a sustainable cultural destination.

Think City Sdn Bhd managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed said Malaysia sits at the confluence of history and geography, as evidenced by the oldest prehistoric settlement in the world after Africa, signifying two million years of human evolution.

"In addition, the archaeological sites of Lembah Bujang and Sungai Batu highlight evidence of the earliest human settlement in Southeast Asia.

"This promises great potential for Malaysia to be enhanced as an international archaeological heritage destination.

"The possibility of new discoveries and opportunities to showcase this historic site will give initial focus to Lenggong, Kuala Kangsar and Taiping," he said during an interview with the New Straits Times and Harian Metro recently.

Think City is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

On April 11, Think City announced that it had allocated RM10 million to support culture-based economic development in the northern Malaysia region, collaborating with the Finance Ministry as part of the Budget 2022 initiative.

Hamdan said Think City has identified potential nodes in the northern region to enhance culture-based experiences and will support grantees who can deepen and diversify visitors' journeys and broaden the public's understanding of the region's cultural significance via the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants Programme.

Under the Cultural Economy Catalytic Grants Programme, culture-based economic development would leverage Malaysia's archaeological heritage by regenerating socio-economic growth and boosting the community's cultural, economic and social capital development.

The programme aimed to achieve its aspiration in capacity building and advocacy, demonstration, and content creation.

Think City is an impact organisation established in 2009 to create more sustainable and equitable places for the benefit of all.

The company's knowledge, skills and strategies focus on urban solutions, the environment, social communities, and the cultural economy.

LADA tawar insentif penerbangan catar

Royal Brunei Airlines' BWN-BKI flight resumes

KOTA KINABALU: Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has resumed its flights to Kota Kinabalu from Bandar Seri Begawan effective yesterday (Friday).

The resumption of RB services here will also open the door for other foreign tourists to visit Sabah via Brunei.

The arrival of flight BI 825 carrying 150 passengers on board at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) at 7.50pm was greeted with a water cannon salute.

RB is the second foreign airline to resume direct flights to Kota Kinabalu, following Singapore's low-cost carrier Scoot.

Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the return of foreign carriers is a great indication for the tourism and economy of Sabah.

"We are pleased to welcome the return of the Royal Brunei Airlines flight.

"The connectivity from Brunei will help with transiting international passengers, especially from routes that were previously in service from Australia, United Kingdom, the Middle East and Japan.

"Sabah is ready to accommodate tourists, and we hope more foreign airlines will begin direct flights to Kota Kinabalu.

"With more direct flights from cities across the southeast Asian region, we can expect an increase in visitors," said Joniston who handed the flight's passengers goodie bags which included shopping vouchers.

He was accompanied by state Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry permanent secretary Datuk Mohd Yusrie Abdullah; Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chief executive officer Noredah Othman; and Royal Brunei Airlines senior vice-president for passenger, cargo and charter sales, Christina Chua.

Christina said Kota Kinabalu is an important destination for RB and they hope to increase the frequency of flights in the near future.

"At the moment, we are flying to Kota Kinabalu two times a week.

"We plan to increase flights, bringing more tourists from Brunei to Sabah," she said as the flight yesterday was full, indicating Bruneians' eagerness to travel.

"Sabah Tourism is collaborating with Suria Sabah and Jesselton Duty Free to provide several discount vouchers to Bruneian travellers.

"We know that Bruneians love to shop and we are happy to welcome them back," said Noredah.

Currently, RB operates between Bandar Seri Begawan and Kota Kinabalu every Friday and Sunday. The flight takes 40 minutes one way.

Kuala Lumpur will welcome more than 3,000 new hotel rooms and hotel suites this year

More than 3,000 new hotel rooms and hotel suites are set to open in Kuala Lumpur this year, according to the latest Kuala Lumpur Hotel Market Outlook & Prospects 2022 report by CBRE|WTW's global joint venture partner, CBRE Asia Pacific.

Among them are the 232-room Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur at PNB 118, the 544-room Conrad Kuala Lumpur (the former MAS headquarters on Jalan Sultan Ismail), the 535-room Parkroyal Collection Kuala Lumpur (and Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Kuala Lumpur), the 160-room Kempinski Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the 252-room Amari Kuala Lumpur, and the 690-room Fairmont Kuala Lumpur.

An additional 1,260 new hotel rooms will open between 2023 and 2025. They include the 471-room Kimpton Kuala Lumpur @ The Tun Razak Exchange, the 226-room So Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Residence in Jalan Ampang, the 213-room Jumeirah Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Residences, and the 350-room Edition Kuala Lumpur.

Can these new hotels and hotel residences generate high revenues when they first open and in the years after that?

The Covid-19 crisis has had a significant impact on the global hospitality industry. Hotels, restaurants, casinos, golf resorts, entertainment centres, and sporting venues have been closed for more than a year as governments and public health officials work to stop the spread of the coronavirus. These businesses moved quickly to mitigate the impact on their operations, furloughing employees, cutting costs, and going digital, among other things, until they were given the go-ahead to reopen.

According to the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), the industry lost revenues of more than RM10 billion in 2021, up from RM6.3 billion in 2020. During the Movement Control Order in 2020, the industry lost about RM300 million in revenue every two weeks.

After more than a year of the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia's hard-hit hospitality industry saw at least 120 hotels close their doors, either temporarily or permanently, due to significant financial losses.

When all economic sectors were allowed to operate again at the end of last year, the hospitality sector regained its momentum.

At the moment, Malaysia's international borders are only open to certain international business travellers and those who have applied under Singapore's Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) arrangement, either by land to Johor Bahru or by air to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The resumption of VTL with Singapore, Malaysia's historically top source market, is expected to have a significant positive impact on the country's and Kuala Lumpur's economic and tourism market recovery in 2022.

Business picked up quickly after domestic travel resumed last year, according to a hotelier.

"I believe Malaysian hotels and resorts will be driven by domestic demand for at least another year, or until the global economy improves and there are no international travel restrictions. People prefer to travel within Malaysia for the time being because travelling abroad is inconvenient. Meanwhile, we can see that discretionary spending has suffered and that spending patterns have shifted. New routines and expectations have emerged. To weather the storm, both new and existing hotel players will need to consider all of these factors," he said.

According to STR AM:PM, which tracks major hotel supply, 65 new hotels (about 14,000 keys) opened between 2011 and 2021, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.8 per cent per year.

As of 2021, Kuala Lumpur hotel room supply included 23 per cent economy, 19 per cent midscale, 15 per cent upper midscale, 22 per cent upscale, 12 per cent upper-upscale, and eight per cent luxury.

According to the report, luxury and upper-upscale will account for more than 60 per cent of total new supply over the next three years.

There is a high level of brand penetration. Sixty per cent of the hotels are independently owned and operated, while fourty per cent are affiliated with a chain. Over the last ten years, the total number of chain-affiliated rooms has increased at a CAGR of 4.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, according to the report, five of the top ten operators in Kuala Lumpur are global hotel groups, accounting for about 26 per cent of the current hotel stock tracked by STR AM:PM. Accor and IHG have the most active pipelines, with 2,710 rooms across nine hotels and 2,158 rooms across seven hotels, respectively. These two brands together account for 36 per cent of the total pipeline.

Hotel deals to continue this year?

According to a CBRE Asia Pacific report, 11 hotel transactions totalling about RM2.3 billion (some US$549 million) were completed between 2017 and 2019, with interest from both international and domestic investors.

Kuala Lumpur had one of its best years in 2017, reflecting positive sentiment in the hotel market as tourism recovered from a weaker performance in 2015 and 2016. The 921-key Renaissance Kuala Lumpur (RM765 million) and 503-key Hilton Kuala Lumpur are among the major transactions (RM497 million).

"Similar to many markets worldwide, Covid-19 had caused challenges to the tourism industry. Consequently, Kuala Lumpur experienced a slowdown in transactions and investment volume in 2020," according to CBRE Asia Pacific.

According to the report, the number of deals in 2020 increased, but total investment volume remained one-fifth of 2017 levels due to uncertainty about the pace of recovery. Smaller hotels and serviced apartments, such as the 158-key City Comfort Hotel, were sold in 2020, primarily to domestic investors. Foreign investment was limited as a result of pandemic-related obstacles such as border closures.

According to the firm, the lower investment volumes since 2020 are most likely the result of a pricing mismatch between sellers' and buyers' expectations.

"However, the recent completion of the 418-key Royale Chulan Bukit Bintang indicates that the gap is starting to narrow, and sellers and buyers may be adopting a more realistic view of the prices given the current market conditions," it said.

The sale of the property was concluded at RM177 million in early 2021, a 10 per cent decline from the original indicated sale price of RM197 million in 2019.

"Price dislocation opportunities are limited on the back of positive sentiment of reopening borders. CBRE Hotels advises clients to focus on centrally located hotels with proven strong operating cash flows," the firm said.

SKS Airways kicks-off direct flights to Pulau Tioman

ROMPIN: After nine years, the first scheduled commercial flight to Pulau Tioman touched down safely today.

The 19-seater turboprop DHC-6-300 Twin Otter aircraft operated by new commercial carrier, SKS Airways from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang landed on the duty-free island at about 10.30am.

Since Berjaya Air ceased operations several years ago, only chartered 12-seater single-engine flights were available for holidaymakers to the island.

Tioman Development Authority (TDA) general manager Datuk Idros Yahya described the return of scheduled flight services as a boon to the tourism industry on the island.

"Now, visitors can either choose to travel by ferry from Rompin or take the direct flight to the island. It will certainly save travel time and attract more people to plan vacation trips to the island.

"The flight which departed Subang at 9am today landed at the airstrip at Tioman Airport, Kampung Tekek on the island at 10.30am. Four flights will be scheduled every week and it will be increased in stages," he said when contacted today.

Idros said the scheduled flight services to the island will allow visitors to plan their holidays in advance and make the necessary bookings.

SKS Airways, in a statement, said Pulau Tioman is the commercial airline's third island destination route after its Subang-Pulau Pangkor and Subang-Pulau Redang routes which were launched on Jan 26 and Jan 31 respectively.

SKS Airways director Datuk Rohman Ahmad was reported saying the flight to Pulau Tioman will provide easy access to island hopping for both domestic and international tourists.

"This would be perfect, in line with the current growing demand for domestic travel and reopening of borders as the country moves towards the Covid-19 endemic phase," he said.

SKS Airways will be operating the new Subang-Pulau Tioman route four times weekly and the flight frequency will be increased to two flights daily from July 1 and Oct 29.

No more physical distancing is required, and people are now free to shake hands, but they are advised to practise good hand hygiene.

Meanwhile, check-ins via the contact tracing app MySejahtera will no longer be required, but the MySJ Trace function should be activated for contact tracing. Regardless of the vaccination status, people will be allowed to enter the premises except for those who test positive for COVID-19 and have been issued a home surveillance order.

“The seven-day mandatory quarantine for positive cases remains, and the MySejahtera app is used for the COVID-19 test results submission and health assessment. LAHAD DATU: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry's (Motac) announcement that the Blue Ring Hole at Tingkayu Reef, Darvel Bay here will be the country's latest tourism product recently is inappropriate.

Local tour operator Glen Hapirulla said using the name blue hole will confuse foreign divers where in fact the site was merely a Blue Ring Reef that he discovered in 2017.

He feared that foreign divers will equate it with blue holes from other countries.

Glen expressed his regret on his social media page after Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, who visited the site recently announced it as a newest tourism product.

Nancy believed there are only 10 Blue Ring Hole sites in the world, but the Tingkayu Reef one was interesting with two marine sinkholes.

In 2019, the Blue Ring Reef was given the spotlight when Sabah Parks allegedly declared it as their new discovery.

However, Glen explained that generally, 'blue hole' refers to a perforated underwater surface structure with a drastic depth reaching 100m such as 'The Blue Hole of Belize' as opposed to the Blue Ring Reef, which has a depth of only 24m.

He said the product has been promoted since 2017 including to the international market by former tourism minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, who is Lahad Datu member of parliament.

"I think it is not appropriate to promote it as a new discovery by the tourism ministry.

"Instead, attention should be given to promote the uniqueness of the underwater area along with the more than 60 dive sites around it.

"The Tourism Ministry should go down to the field to try the diving experience to fully understand the potential of the industry in Lahad Datu.

"We have done one in 2017 under 'The End in Sipadan Diving Trail programme' to promote Darvel Bay as one of the stopover destinations in Sabah," he suggested.

He also hoped small entrepreneurs will be given the opportunity to enjoy the new incentives announced by the Tourism Ministry.

Glen said he had been operating over the past 10 years and explored more than 60 sites including the discovery of the Blue Ring Reef.

He suggested that the commitment of the dive operators who endured the ups and downs of the tourism industry should be among the criteria set in the new incentives.

"Despite this, I will continue to explore the underwater sites of the Blue Ring Reef and also to remove the bad perception of Lahad Datu as an area considered unsafe by foreign tourists," he said.
