Fifth Round Of WAITGC 2016 To Tee Off In Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 SEPT 2016 – International and local amateur golfers are all geared up to compete in the fifth qualifying round of the World Amateur Inter Team Golf Championship (WAITGC) 2016 in Sarawak.

Teams from Australia, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia are participating in the four-day event, which kicked off today at the Kelab Golf Sarawak and Damai Golf & Country Club.

Kelab Golf Sarawak (Sarawak Golf Club) is located approximately 10 km from the centre of Kuching City. To club members, the golfing fraternity and frequent visitors, the club is more affectionately known as “KGS”. The main feature of KGS is its 36-holes golf course, the only one in the Land of the Hornbills. The majestic clubhouse separates the two golfing locations. To the south is the Matang/Santubong 18; and to the north is the Siol/Demak 18.

The Matang/ Santubong course is named after Sarawak’s well known geographical landmarks, the two famous mountain ranges – Santubong and Matang. The mountains themselves are clearly visible from the golf course, approximately 25 km from the clubhouse. The newly upgraded championship course is 6,394 meters long, par 72, designed to test a player’s ball-striking accuracy and course management skills. It comes with a combination of undulating Paspalum fairways and strategically positioned hazards to provide a great challenge to both the high handicappers and scratch players alike.

The fifth qualifying round will continue at Damai Golf & Country Club. Established in April 1996, The Damai Golf and Country Club in Sarawak boasts the true elegance of an international standard 18-hole, par 72 golf course. The first Arnold Palmer-designed golf course in Malaysia, it features a Mountain Nine and an Ocean Nine which are remarkably different in character. The setting is truly spectacular, bordering the foothill of Mount Santubong and hugging the beaches, rocky outcrops and mangrove forests of the South China Sea. The Club offers modern conveniences and facilities such as buggies, café, retail outlets and many more to ensure a memorable experience for its golfers.

With the dedication and commitment of staff members from 7am to 7pm daily in areas such as operations and course maintenance, Damai Golf and Country Club is adept in handling major events such as the Damai Challenge, the Astro Members World Golf Amateur Challenge, the Thommo Titanium Golf Challenge, the Carlsberg Golf Classic and many more. Damai Golf and Country Club has also been a favourite gathering ground for ardent golfers such as business people, government officials and families from all over the world. In its efforts to continue serving its current and new clients, Damai Golf and Country Club offers innovative joint promotions with its sister properties namely Damai Beach Resort, Grand Margherita Hotel, Riverside Majestic Hotel and Sarawak Cultural Village.

Golf tourism has been identified as one of the key priority projects to increase the nation’s tourism contribution to the economy, and has in fact been underscored in the country’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
