KOTA KINABALU: Regional air carrier MASwings is looking at untapped destinations in the East Asean Growth Area (EAGA) as part of its expansion plans. The Malaysia Airlines subsidiary wants to have flights between Kuching and the Indonesian Kali mantan town of Pontianak apart from the Kota Kinabalu-Tawau-Tarakan service. MASwings managing director Datuk Mohd Salleh Ahmad said the company was looking at establishing flights between Kota Kinabalu and Brunei and onward to Mulu in Sarawak.
“There is opportunity for us to launch our new service for these routes as the demand for air travel is not big enough for jet aircraft but suitable for our short haul ATR72-500 aircraft,” he said after the graduation of 11 MASwings cabin crew members here yesterday. Mohd Salleh said the carrier was hoping to launch these new services by next year pending approval from the various authorities and company shareholders. He said MASwings had made significant strides since its establishment three years ago when its operations started with 450 flights weekly, which has since more than doubled.
Mohd Salleh said despite the surge in its operations, MASwings had the best On Time Performance of any Malaysian airline. (On Time Performance is a rating in the number of flights that depart on time as opposed to their scheduled departure time.) He said MASwings recorded a rating of 94% and flight delays were largely due to factors like bad weather.
