Tourism Malaysia Boosts Global Cruise Industry Focus at Seatrade Cruise Global 2024

Malaysia is aiming to capitalize on the cruise tourism sector as part of its strategy for Visit Malaysia 2026. In 2023, the country experienced a remarkable surge in cruise arrivals, with ports welcoming 1,055 ships carrying 1,520,608 passengers—an 84.78% increase in ship arrivals and a 62.43% rise in passengers compared to pre-pandemic rates in 2019.

As a burgeoning tourism hotspot in Southeast Asia, Malaysia currently serves as the homeport for two cruise lines operating from Port Klang in Kuala Lumpur, with plans for further expansion in the pipeline. The departure of the Costa Serena from Port Klang in January 2024 marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s ambition to become a premier homeporting destination. Costa Serena joins the ranks of cruise partners choosing Kuala Lumpur as their homeport. This development positions cruise tourism as a pivotal sector in enhancing Malaysia’s global allure, aligning with the objectives of Visit Malaysia 2026, which aims to attract 35.6 million foreign tourists in 2026.

To support these objectives and in accordance with the National Transport Policy (NTP) 2019-2030, a Malaysian delegation led by The Honorable Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, is participating in Seatrade Cruise Global 2024, taking place from April 8 to 11, 2024, at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, Florida, USA.

Attendees are encouraged to visit booth #311 to engage with the Ministry of Transport Malaysia and its port authorities to learn more about Malaysia’s strategic location, top-notch infrastructure, and abundant natural and cultural attractions.

As part of the promotional efforts to position Malaysia as a premier homeporting destination, The Honorable Minister of Transport will deliver a keynote address titled “Malaysia Truly Asia: Malaysia Cruise Tourism” at the event. This platform will be utilized to showcase the advantages and potential of Malaysia as an appealing cruise destination. Malaysia’s emergence as a homeporting hub is expected to not only bolster the country’s tourism sector but also provide a significant boost to the local economy, benefiting various tourism-related industries such as hospitality, tourism services, food and beverage businesses, among others.

“We are again thrilled to be part of Seatrade Cruise Global. This event provides an excellent platform to highlight Malaysia’s potential as a homeport and to forge valuable connections with industry leaders. We look forward to engaging with the global cruise community and inviting them to experience the wonders of Malaysia, especially in developing suitable cruise tourism trips and packages into Malaysia”, said Mr. Akbal Setia, the Vice President of Tourism Malaysia – Americas.

RM40mil in sales targeted for MATTA Fair Penang this month

Wong (fourth from left), Leong (on his left) and tourism industry stakeholders after the press conference to announce MATTA Fair Penang 2024 to be held from April 27 to 28.

SOME 35,000 visitors are expected to throng the upcoming MATTA Fair Penang 2024 at Setia SPICE Convention Centre on April 27 and 28. This target marks a significant increase from the 29,000 people who visited the fair last year.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said they expected to hit RM40mil in sales revenue at this year’s fair compared to RM33mil recorded last year.

“We have set our sights on accommodating up to 300 booths, at the arena and concourse area, featuring both domestic and international travel packages.

“So far, 260 booths have been taken up,” she said in a press conference.

The exhibitors represent a diverse range from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Leong said that with the support of the state government, MATTA would subsidise 50% of the booth price for local domestic industry players to promote the state’s tourism.

She said that MATTA would also give back to society by providing some space for charitable homes to showcase and sell their products.

“To ensure that every customer buying travel packages during the fair receives a genuine deal, the inbound and outbound travel exhibitors have been requested to display their licence by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry,” she said.

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the state’s tourism had shown promising growth this year.

He said the number of visitors to Penang via air travel increased by 26.93% in January and February this year, from 454,839 visitors in 2023 to 577,329 visitors this year.

“Penang also recorded 303 international flights in February this year compared to 204 in the same corresponding month last year,” he said.

Wong said the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) welcomed a total of 131,208 passengers from January to February this year, compared to 100,803 passengers during the same period last year.

He said the increase in visitor arrivals via flights and cruises could be due to the Chinese New Year celebration and the visa-free policy between Malaysia and China.

He also noted that direct flights between Penang and destinations like Shanghai (China), Dubai (UAE) and Chennai (India) would be launched this year.

“With these additional direct flights, we are well on our way in reaching our target of 15 direct flights, facilitating smoother travel experiences for tourists from around the world,” he added.

Wong said with the expansion of Penang International Airport (PIA) approved by the government, the passenger capacity would increase from 6.5 million to 12 million – making Penang the second largest airport in Malaysia.

“To cope with the increasing number of direct flights and the passenger arrivals, PIA has also introduced a waiting zone on the second floor to cope with and assist in passenger movement especially during peak times,” he said.

“Once the airport expansion is completed and with new hotels expected between now and 2026, as well as the Penang Light Rail Transit project and the Penang Hill cable car project which is scheduled for completion in 2026 – Penang’s tourism industry is looking at a promising growth indeed.”

He urged stakeholders not to lose sight of their responsibility and to prioritise the preservation of natural resources, cultural heritage and local communities to elevate Penang as a competitive tourism destination, not only in Asia but also on the global stage.

Also present at the press conference were representatives from Malaysia Airlines, RHB Bank, Tourism Malaysia northern region and travel agents.

Penang LRT on track to ease traffic and enhance tourism

GEORGE TOWN: The implementation of the Penang Mutiara Route Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is seen as a beneficial alternative transportation option for residents to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility by connecting urban and suburban areas.

The LRT line, expected to run from Silicon Island to Komtar and crossing to Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai, is also poised to boost tourism in the state, which is rich with Unesco Biosphere Reserve Sites.

Transportation analyst and expert Abi Sofian Abdul Hamid said that the LRT network connects strategic locations, fulfilling users’ demands with efficient and accessible transportation hubs at each station.

“Therefore, support networks for ‘the last mile’ and related aspects need to be taken into consideration, including shuttle transportation and parking facilities.“If we look at the Prime Minister’s announcement, this project will also involve transit- oriented development concepts where LRT stations will be focal points for residential and job centre development,” he said recently, Bernama reported.

Abi Sofian, who is also the Founder of Thought Partners Group Consulting (TPG), explained that the project could contribute to green mobility by reducing vehicles and carbon emissions.

He said this is in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap if executed based on thorough research findings and proper implementation.

In theory, he said, with stations located at tourist attractions, it can help tourists move easily from one attraction to another, including Penang Sentral Station, which offers seamless transportation connectivity.

Commenting on the Federal Government’s decision to officially take over the LRT project from the state government, Abi Sofian said it would ensure various project management aspects are better handled, considering the involvement of MRT Corp with its experience in delivering rapid transportation in the Klang Valley.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Transport Business Consultant YS Chan noted that apart from benefiting commuters, industrial tourism will get a boost as Penang is a showcase for the successful manufacturing of high-tech products, not only in Malaysia, but also globally.

“Visitors will no longer have to brave congested traffic as travelling by LRT will be a breeze and they will be impressed to witness a large number of locals enjoying the facility.

However, the entire LRT route must be carefully thought out and the location of stations strategically planned,” he said. The LRT project, estimated to span about 29km with 20 stations and targeted to operate by 2030, will include two interchange stations at Komtar station and Penang Sentral station.

Commencement is expected to be in September or October this year.

KK resort recruits 'tree doctor' to manage organic garden

KOTA KINABALU: Almost every morning, Su Mon Fung spends at least four hours under the sun tending to the herb garden of a resort here.

When hotel patrons visit the site, the 36-year-old arborist from Beaufort lets them try the taste of fresh leaves plucked directly from the organic garden.

Since she joined the resort less than a year ago, the number of flowers and herbs has increased to more than 40 species, including lemongrass, basil, edible flowers and rosemary, for salads.

"There are also butterflies coming to our garden, which shows that the plants are healthy and thriving," said the Universiti Malaysia Sabah graduate, adding that the resort also successfully introduced stingless bees to the herb garden.

The three-decade-old garden has become one of the sites for Shangri-la Tanjung Aru resort to become more sustainable.

Every month, Su said the garden could provide up to 50kg for the resort's kitchens, resulting in savings of approximately RM1,000.

"Apart from fruit peels, the resort also sends back between 4kg and 8kg of eggshells for composting to fertilise our garden."

Recently, the resort received the Asean Green Hotel Standard award from the Asean Tourism Forum 2024 (ATF) held in Vientiane, Laos, in recognition of its sustainable tourism practices.

The Asean Green Hotel Standard fosters sustainable tourism through the adoption of environmentally friendly and energy conservation practices, as well as compiling, adapting, and creating tools and training to engage in Asean Green Hotel practices.

Other practices applied by the resort include using a food waste monitoring system to avoid oversupply of food, eliminating plastic mineral water bottles in the hotel shop, utilising solar-powered lights to illuminate the resort's car parks and gardens, collecting rainwater, and recycling plastic and paper.

In the guestrooms, the resort provides reusable glass bottles for storing drinking water, and the air conditioning automatically turns off when the room balcony doors are open.

The resort also conducts annual training for all employees and suppliers about its environmental policies. It also educates young guests and communities about marine conservation through the Clownfish Discovery Centre.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) chief executive officer Datuk Rosmawati Lasuki recently earned a mention in the Asia Book of Records for curating 870 different types of traditional, local, and international cuisines from 55 countries in one setting.

She achieved this feat with the Ramadan Dinner Buffet 2024, themed a 'Taste of the World' held from March 15 to April 9 at the convention centre.

She received a certificate of recognition from Sabah Chief Minister's wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag for her achievement.

The record is under the category of preparing and displaying maximum dishes of international cuisines at the SICC, which was carried out on Thursday.

Juliah also presented certificates to all members of the SICC banquet team.

The remarkable accomplishment was confirmed by Asia Book of Records' official adjudicator, Evelyn Kuppa.

Rosmawati said the SICC initiated the diverse buffet spread in 2021 with a theme 'Selera Kampung' during the movement control order to ensure people could break their fast with a variety of food.

The number of cuisines expanded the following year with the theme 'The Taste of Asian'. "After that, we asked what is next? That is how the idea to curate the taste of the world came about," she said.

Setting a target to cater for 1,600 people every night, they offered diners a wide selection of cuisine to choose from. Rosmawati said mutton, satay and Chinese cuisine were always the most sought after dishes.

The record-setting endeavour was led by SICC director of Food and Beverage operations and chef, Mohd Firdaus Mohd Izhar and his team of 70 culinary experts.

"We hope that one day, Sabah will be a place for culinary tourism. That is our long-term goal,"said Rosmawati. She said with such an extensive array of dishes, diners are advised to eat slowly as the buffet was open from 5pm to 10pm.

"Our objective is to provide a place for people to gather with family and friends, as well as an opportunity for corporations to treat their staff and network with other companies. "SICC aims to promote the harmony of the state through food," she said.

Safety first for Mersing tourism industry players

EIGHT tourism industry operators were selected to be part of an Aquatic Competency Rescue Course, to ensure sustainability as well as safety of visitors to Johor’s islands.

The three-day programme was organised by Mersing District Council (MDM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia.

MDM president Mohd Norman Noh said the programme was held as part of the local council’s plan for sustainable tourism. “We wanted to create more competent industry players in all aspects, especially those that involve safety,” he said.

He added that the candidates were taken to Southern Region Civil Defence Training Centre (Pulapas) in Kluang, Johor, to attend the course.

“Those selected are boatmen and chalet and resort operators, as well as island-hopping guides who work on islands off Mersing,” Mohd Norman said when contacted by StarMetro.

He said the candidates were also exposed to water rescue techniques, especially during emergency situations. “This course is important in increasing skills of the human capital and youths in Mersing,” he said, adding that it also stressed the importance of having knowledge about safety.

The candidates were also given practical training on swimming and aquatic rescue as well as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and water safety theory, said Mohd Norman.

Mohd Norman said the council had worked together with Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) Mersing in placing a mooring buoy in Pulau Besar. “This is part of our effort to protect and preserve the coral reefs around the island,” he said.

According to RCM Mersing programme manager Nazirul Amin Azmi, six mooring buoys were placed at four islands. Apart from Pulau Besar, the other islands are Pulau Tengah, Pulau Hujung and Pulau Harimau.

“This is one of our annual activities after the monsoon season ends and the islands are open for tourist activities.

“The mooring buoys will be used by boat operators to tie their boats during snorkelling activities instead of dropping anchors, which can damage reefs,” said Nazirul.

AirAsia resumes direct flights between Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu

KUCHING: AirAsia has resumed direct flights between Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu beginning today.

The first flight from Penang to Kuching, operating as flight AK5432 with 160 passengers on board, touched down at the Kuching International Airport at 3.40pm.

On hand to accord them a special welcome are Tourism Malaysia Sarawak director Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus and AirAsia head of Sarawak Affairs Hamdan Mohamad.

The service was axed a year ago on March 1 due to shortage of aircraft.

It was reported that half of AirAsia's aircraft were scheduled for maintenance. The carrier will continue with its once daily frequency with the flight from Kuching to Penang departing at 11.50am and the Penang to Kuching flight departing 2.15pm.

The flight from Kota Kinabalu to Penang will depart at 8am with the returning aircraft departing Penang at 11.05am.

Nurul Ain said the resumption of the direct flights should be significant to the tourism industry in Penang and Sarawak. "Each state has its own uniqueness and appeal. They will foster the two states tourism industry," she said.

Nurul Ain said in a statement that by bolstering the air connectivity of these states, "we anticipate a substantial positive impact on Sarawak's tourism growth." "Leveraging the diverse travellers from Penang, we aim to showcase Sarawak's rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes and unique experiences.

"This renewed connectivity opens up exciting opportunities to attract more visitors and further enhance Sarawak's position as a premier tourism destination in Malaysia," she said.

AirAsia Aviation Group chief executive officer Bo Lingam said the airline is proud to strengthen its connectivity within Malaysia and at the same time boost its Sabah and Sarawak hubs. "As a homegrown airline, this route resumption reflects our commitment to expanding connectivity in Malaysia.

"By reintroducing this route, we aim to cater to the increasing demand for travel between Penang, and Sabah and Sarawak while further supporting economic growth and tourism development in the country," he said.
