KUDAT: The popular Tip of Borneo will be accessible by the public starting next month after almost a two-year closure to make way for upgrading works.

This was revealed by Tourism, Culture, and Environment minister Datuk Christina Liew after she inspected the site recently to monitor the progress of works.

She said that Phase 1 of the upgrading works began on Dec 5, 2021 but due to bad weather and late delivery of building materials to the construction site, it took a longer time to be completed.

Liew said improved facilities included a new covered walkway to replace the existing one, a toilet for persons with disabilities, and a viewing platform.

"The safety of tourists and visitors is of utmost importance. Railings and lamp posts have been installed at the viewing platform.

Phase 2 of the upgrading works, which involves the demolition of the existing structure and the construction of a new visitor's centre, is currently taking place and is expected to be completed in six to 10 months.

The Tip of Borneo or Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, is known for its breathtaking views where the Sulu and South China Seas meet.

The area is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful sunsets, pristine beaches, and cultural attractions.
