SIC announces legendary Max Biaggi as Wildcard for eni FIM World Superbike Championship 2015 Malaysia Round


Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today confirmed former two-time World Superbike champion Max Biaggi’s comeback to action – competing as a wildcard entry in the eni FIM World Superbike Championship 2015 (WSBK) Malaysian Round, taking place on 31 July to 2 August 2015. The announcement was made by SIC Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Razlan Razali at the Official Launch of the eni FIM World Superbike Championship 2015 Malaysian Round today. The launch was officiated by Dato’Mirza Mohammad Taiyab, Director General of Tourism Malaysia from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, accompanied by Dato’ Razlan and SIC Chairman Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.

Dato’ Razlan described Biaggi's decision to compete in Malaysia as a huge endorsement for the sport in the country. "We are absolutely thrilled Max Biaggi accepted our offer to compete as a wildcard entry in the eni FIM World Superbike Championship round in Malaysia. He is a legendary rider who has not only achieved extensive accolades in motorcycle racing, but has also greatly contributed to the sport. His decision to compete in Malaysia is indeed a reflection of the prestige and popularity of motorcycle racing in the country,” commented Dato’ Razlan.

Biaggi, the Italian ace who retired in 2012 after claiming his second world superbike title, is a major icon in world motorcycle racing and will certainly attract global attention when he competes in Malaysia.Local fans will vividly remember the "Roman Emperor" who used to command support from his legions of fans whenever he raced in Malaysia in the 1990s. 


The high-flying Biaggi sensationally claimed the 250cc title four times between 1994 and 1997 before moving on to the 500cc class. In total, he would go on to bag an amazing 42 GP victories. He then later moved on to World Superbike racing where he wrested the world crown twice in 2010 and 2012.

Biaggi, on board an Aprilia,has already made the headlines at the recent race in Misano where he sensationally clocked the fastest times during the free practice sessions. He qualified fifth fastest and went on to finish sixth place in both races.

Biaggi's presence is expected to bring in the fans who will remember his heroic exploits over the years. The Italian ace will be representing SIC with expertise from the Aprilia Racing Team in the Malaysian Round which is being staged in Sepang for the second consecutive year. “Biaggi will be the biggest name to ever compete in Team SIC Malaysia colours,” Dato’Razlan said.

2015 Malaysia Round will be held from 31 July to 2 August - featuring the Superbike World Championship and the Supersport World Championship as well as a host of support races including the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup, Round 2 of the Malaysia Superbike Championship and the Ducati Desmo Cup. 


Meanwhile, at the ceremony, SIC also unveiled the new official Winner’s Trophy for the eni FIM Superbike World Championship 2015, which was specially designed by Royal Selangor. The new trophy has an avant-garde look inspired by the structure of the superbike itself. The combination of sharp and sleek curves allude to the chassis and the overall silhouette of the superbike as it roars down the track, cornering smoothly before speeding towards victory. The trophy base is coloured red to symbolise the passion ignited by the superbike championship in Malaysia.

This year, fans will get to experience one of Malaysia’s biggest bike fests at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in conjunction with theeni FIM World Superbike Championship 2015 (WSBK). 

During the eni FIM World Superbike Championship 2015 (WSBK) Malaysian Round, SIC will be transforming the circuit into a wholesome festival for two-wheel fans. The fest is bringing in popular biking events in Malaysia such as Motack, Motojamm, the Malaysian Supermoto Championship, the Auto Carnival and adding on exciting offerings of products and services for bikers and bike-related business owners alike, in a magnificent treat for biking fans, all under one roof. 


Motorcycle racing fans are advised to grab their tickets early to get the seating of their choice. With the Early Bird promotion having ended on 30 June, tickets will be available at the still attractive normal prices from 1 July. Ticket prices begin from RM84.80 inclusive of GST for seats at the K1 Grandstand, which provides a perfect view of Turns 6, 7, 8 and 9 as well as Turn 15 and the entry on the front straight. Main Grandstand tickets are available at RM137.80, inclusive of GST. For a special treat, fans can get into the excitement with Max Biaggi’s diehard fans at the Max Biaggi Tribune areawhich comes with an exclusive Max flag located at the Main Grandstand’s Diamond zone for only RM153.70.

For maximum enjoyment of the event, fans are recommended to purchase the Paddock Access tickets, which will allow fans to be up closewith the riders at the paddock, catch the race from the rooftop of the Pit Building andenjoy a close behind-the-scenesview of the activities within the paddock. The paddock passes are offered at RM530. 

Fans also have the option of purchasing various ticket packages, which combine exclusive event merchandise with the ticket.
