200 basikal klasik berhimpun di Melaka

MELAKA: Kira-kira 200 pemilik basikal klasik dari seluruh negara akan berhimpun bagi menyertai Program Kayuhan Sulung 2022 Basikal Klasik Bukit Rambai, Melaka pada 25 Jun ini.

Pengerusi program, Roslan Mohd. Salleh berkata, kayuhan anjuran bersama Kelab Asamboi Bikers dan Kelab Basikal Klasik Bukit Rambai itu juga turut disertai pemilik basikal klasik dari Si­ngapura, Thailand dan Indonesia.

Menurutnya, perhimpunan itu dijangka menarik lebih ramai lagi pemilik basikal klasik khususnya mereka yang tidak mempunyai kelab.

“Setakat ini, sebanyak 200 penyertaan daripada kelab-kelab seluruh negara, tetapi saya jangka lebih ramai lagi pemilik basikal klasik akan datang dan mungkin akan mencecah sehingga 300 penyertaan.

“Tujuan kita anjurkan program ini adalah untuk memperkenalkan Melaka sebagai destinasi pelancongan dengan banyak kesan sejarah sejak zaman Portugis, Belanda dan Inggeris dalam kalangan pemilik basikal klasik.

“Laluan sepanjang 15 kilometer (km) akan dilalui peserta bermula dari Taman Rambai Utama, Klebang hingga ke Pulau Gadong dan di setiap tempat, peserta akan singgah untuk melawat pelbagai kesan sejarah dan produk pelancongan yang ada di sini,” katanya ketika ditemui Mingguan Malaysia.

Ujarnya, antara kelab yang telah mengesahkan penyertaan ialah Basikal Klasik Sri Manjung, Klang Classic Bicycle Club, Kelab Basikal Klasik Perlis, Kelab Basikal Tua GB Teluk Intan, Kelab Basikal Tua Kelantan, Kelab Basikal Klasik Penang, Basikal Klasik Terengganu dan Basikal Tua Kuala Pilah.

“Pelbagai basikal klasik yang akan digunakan peserta antaranya paling popular ialah basikal posmen, Hercules, Raleigh, Airborne, Norton dan Triumph.

Joniston: Sabah's tourism industry showing signs of recovery

KUALA LUMPUR: Sabah's tourism recovery efforts are showing signs of success with a growing number of direct international and domestic flights flying to the state.

State Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said international connectivity was making great Sabah accessible within the Southeast Asia region.

"I am pleased to announce that our domestic connection is expanding, with 389 weekly flights now available since the interstate travel ban was lifted late last year and international borders reopened in April this year.

"There were 445 weekly flights before the pandemic.

"Sabah has welcomed five direct international flights and we will receive two more direct flights from Incheon, South Korea, to Kota Kinabalu next week.

"We are also expecting the Bangkok-Kota Kinabalu direct flight to resume. This is indeed an extremely positive scene for the Sabah tourism industry."

He said this at the launch of the two-day Bazaar Matta at Sunway Velocity Mall here today.

Present were Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang, Tourism Malaysia's domestic and events senior director Iskandar Mirza Mohd Yusof and Sabah Tourism Board chief marketing officer Tay Shu Lan., among others.

Airlines operating direct flights to Kota Kinabalu are Air Asia (via Manila and Singapore), Scoot (via Singapore), Royal Brunei Airlines (via Brunei) and Jin Air (via Incheon).

For domestic travel, Kota Kinabalu has direct flights from Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Penang, Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur.

Sandakan and Tawau are also accessible from Kuala Lumpur.

There has also been a growth in domestic and foreign visitors to Sabah, with 408,530 arrivals between January and April.

These include 392,968 domestic tourists and 15,562 foreign tourists.

"This estimate represents a 412 per cent increase over the same period last year.

"For us, this is a promising indicator of people's desire to return to Sabah, to travel and discover new places," said Joniston, who also chairs the Sabah Tourism Board.

He commended Matta for hosting the event and for highlighting Sabah.

"Even though the Bazaar Matta is a smaller travel fair than the usual Matta Fair, the fact that 30 travel agents are taking part this weekend is a good sign that the event is just as important.

"Sabah packages were in high demand at recent travel exhibitions.

"On that note, Sabah Tourism Board encourages visitors to always use licensed travel agents when booking and arranging vacations."

At the bazaar, Sabah will promote and sell domestic travel and tourism packages with prizes to be won, including flight tickets to Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, and Sandakan.

Visitors are entitled to RM100 Boost vouchers.

Tan said the bazaar was Matta's pilot project, adding that it would highlight other states by bringing in travel agents to boost domestic travel.

"We are highlighting Sabah first because tourism is one of its key sectors. There has been an increasing demand for Sabah and its rural destinations."

Sabah sharpens outfit to advance medical tourism

 

A plan is in the works to establish Sabah Health and Wellness Tourism Council (SHWTC) to market Sabah as a destination for medical tourism.

The pro-tem committee led by Anil Kumar met with the assistant minister of tourism, culture, and environment Joniston Bangkuai on June 13 to discuss the formation of SHWTC. The latter, who chairs the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), has been invited to be the advisor of the Council.

Sabah’s tourism leaders convened on June 13 to discuss the development of medical tourism

Anil said SHWTC will act as a one-stop centre for all matters related to the health paradigm.

“The council aims to provide impetus and focus to place Sabah health and wellness tourism on the world stage,” he said, adding that the state already has the required infrastructures and facilities.

He added that medical tourism will be a “new market” for the state, and will generate “high revenue”.

“We want to collaborate with STB on how we can effectively advertise this area and attract people from neighbouring countries, particularly the BIMP-EAGA region, to seek health and wellness treatment in Sabah,” said Anil.

Joniston gave assurance that the STB would work closely with members of the local medical community to make Sabah a choice of destination for healthcare tourism.

He shared: “Other states, like Penang and Malacca, already have their state healthcare tourism councils, so this move is timely. Accordingly, this is also in line with STB’s efforts to attract high-end travellers.

“We’ve had success in other sectors of tourism, such as rural tourism, and there’s no reason why Sabah can’t do the same in medical tourism.”

Joniston added: “We must work closely together to achieve the goal, develop strategic plans to promote health care services here, and look at prospective target markets, especially when Nusantara (on Borneo island, where Sabah state is also located) is set to become Indonesia’s new capital.”

Joniston suggested that SHWTC consider including representatives from relevant government and private agencies as members.

Meanwhile, Noredah Othman, STB’s CEO, mentioned that the NTO has started promoting medical tourism through the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council.

Nevertheless, she stated that STB was prepared to get on board with SHWTC to exchange experience and skills to develop a viable package for medical tourism in the state.

“It is essential to have local medical practitioners who can educate our stakeholders, such as hoteliers and tour operators, on the various healthcare options that are available to tourists.

“STB will be happy to collaborate with SHTWC to conduct a workshop for tourism players to increase their awareness on the offerings for medical tourism in the State,” she said.

Free use of all RapidKL operated transport for a month

 

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will be able to use all public transport operated by RapidKL for free, for a month starting today.

These involve the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), Light Rail Transit, Bus Rapid Transit, monorail as well as RapidKL buses.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob made the announcement when he officiated the first phase of the MRT Putrajaya Line this morning.

The public can start using the new line, which comprises 12 stations between Kwasa Damansara and Kampung Batu, from 3pm today.

Of the total stations, nine of them namely Damansara Damai, Sri Damansara Barat, Sri Damansara Sentral, Sri Damansara Timur, Metro Prima, Kepong Baru, Jinjang, Sri Delima and Kampung Batu are new stations.

The remaining stations Kwasa Damansara, Kampung Selamat and Sungai Buloh stations were previously part of the MRT Kajang Line.

The new line will be served by 20 train sets. Each train set consists of four cars and can carry a total 1,200 passengers. The trains operate on fully automatic mode and are driverless.

Malaysia Tourism Council tackles labour crunch

 

To minimise the acute manpower shortage in the travel and hospitality industry, Malaysia Tourism Council (MTC) has devised a plan to share with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, in the hope that the ministry will take it up with the relevant government agencies.

MTC president, Uzaidi Udanis, shared with TTG Asia that the council had a meeting with travel and tourism players two weeks ago and several strategies were devised for short- and mid-term solutions to cover the transport, hospitality, F&B and retail industry.

Short-term solutions included attracting foreign interns to gain industry exposure in Malaysia and encouraging students to pursue tourism and hospitality courses upon completing their secondary education. He pointed out that hospitality and tourism institutions in Malaysia were having difficulties with recruitment.

On the manpower shortage, Zahira Tahir, founder and CEO, Universal Holidays, also shared that the problem was acute in the hospitality industry across all hotels – regardless of star ratings – throughout the country.

Due to the labour crunch, many had not been operating at full capacity, she said. Currently, it is the peak season for tourists from India and Middle East markets, domestic demand is high and many Singaporeans visit on the weekends too.

Universal Holidays had to rearrange itineraries according to room availability. She explained: “When we can’t get rooms in Genting, we do Genting as a day trip. When there are no rooms in Kuala Lumpur, we develop the itinerary with another destination first.”

Zahira also highlighted on the shortage of private vehicles to ferry tourists around as suppliers were short of drivers while some had reduced their inventory.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Association of Hotels had reached out to the Human Resources Ministry to expedite the work permits of foreign workers, but had not received a response, reported The Star recently.

Penang to finally welcome international cruise, two years after Covid-19

 

GEORGE TOWN: Royal Caribbean's vessel Spectrum of the Seas, which will set sail between Singapore and Penang, will anchor at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) here on July 2.

Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, who took to his Facebook page to announce the matter, said this was good news for the tourism and services sectors in the state.

"Spectrum of the Seas was initially scheduled to anchor here on June 18. However, there were several issues with the Immigration Department. Now, everything have been properly arranged.

"Since March 18, 2020, following the lockdown imposed by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no international cruises have anchored here.

"As such, Spectrum of the Seas, which will anchor here on July 2, is an opportunity long-awaited by the industry, which has been hoping that visitors will increase their businesses," he said.

According to Tan, PPC is fully prepared in efforts to render cooperation when the vessel arrives.

He said two meetings involving several departments were held recently.

They included the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, state government agencies, state port health department, Immigration Department, Customs Department, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department, Penang Port Sdn Bhd, Marine Department (northern region), state police, Penang Global Tourism (PGT), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and others.

"Both meetings were aimed at coordinating preparatory works prior to the arrival of the vessel.

"Besides that, thorough checks on the port operations have also been carried out to ensure that when the giant vessel arrives, visitors will be greeted warmly.

"After this, Spectrum of the Seas will anchor in Penang twice weekly," he added.

Tan said this was good news for the state's economy and would further spur the growth of the tourism industry.

He said, after the reopening of the country's borders, industries related to tourism were slowly bouncing back.

"With the arrival of the international vessels, this will breathe life to the market," he said.

During the recent state legislative assembly sitting, the Penang government urged Putrajaya to allow international cruises to enter the country as soon as possible.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin had said that the federal government's decision not to reopen its seas to international cruises would hurt the country's tourism industry.

International tourists have been allowed into the country since April 1, but only by air or overland travel.

KUALA KRAI: Musim cuti persekolahan memberi limpahan rezeki kepada pengusaha rumah rehat di kawasan Dabong dan Je­lawang, dekat sini apabila premis masing-masing penuh ditempah.

Situasi itu menyebabkan kira-kira 11 pengusaha di situ terpaksa menolak tempahan pe­langgan kerana ketiadaan bilik sehingga hujung minggu ini.

Bercakap kepada Utusan Malaysia, pemilik Irfan Chalet Jelawang, Wan Zawiha Wan Hamad berkata, rata-rata pelanggan sudah menempah bilik penginapan sejak bulan lalu.

Katanya, ketika ini semua tiga buah rumah rehatnya penuh sehingga minggu depan.

“Biasanya pelanggan cuma menginap ketika hujung minggu, tetapi kali ini berbeza apabila bilik penuh pada hari biasa juga.

“Mereka mengambil kesempatan cuti musim persekolahan untuk bercuti bersama keluarga masing-masing di Dabong dan Jelawang,” katanya di sini semalam.

Wan Zawiha yang mengusahakan rumah rehat sejak empat tahun lalu berkata, dia bersyu­kur dapat menjana pendapatan dengan memberi sewa rumah rehat kepada pelancong.

Katanya, sebelum ini kawasan tumpuan pelancong suram sejak lebih dua tahun lepas susulan pelaksanaan sekatan pergerakan bagi memben­dung pandemik Covid-19, namun kini kembali meriah sekali gus memberi sinar baharu kepada peniaga sektor pelancongan di kawasan ini.

“Saya bersyukur dapat menjana pendapatan melebihi RM2,000 sebulan selepas Train to Dabong tular dalam media sosial dan menjadi tumpuan pelancong tempatan serta luar negeri.

“Rumah rehat saya sering menjadi tumpuan kerana hanya 10 minit dari Stesen Keretapi Dabong dan berada berdekatan dengan kawasan pelancongan seperti Gunung Stong dan Gua Ikan,” katanya.

Tourism Malaysia’s Fam Trip Is Back To Kuala Lumpur, Pahang & Perak

 

KUALA LUMPUR, 08 JUNE 2022 – Tourism Malaysia is taking travel trade partners and media from the Indonesian market on its familiarisation trip to promote Malaysia as a safe holiday destination and welcome more international travellers as the borders have fully reopened.

A total of six (6) travel agents and two (2) media aboard Malaysia Airlines from Jakarta for a five-day four-night (5D4N) trip in collaboration with BMC Travel Sdn Bhd from 30 ^st May to 3^rd June 2022. Malaysia Airlines serves daily direct flights from Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Denpasar to Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia only recorded 711,723 Indonesian tourists in 2021, compared to the same period in 2019, with a total of 3.6 million Indonesians visiting Malaysia. We hope that this programme will motivate our industry friends to come back stronger in reviving the tourism industry said Dato’ Haji Zainuddin.

Starting 1 ^st May 2022, fully-vaccinated inbound travellers are no longer required to undergo pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests, including children aged 12 and below as well as for those who have been infected with COVID-19 within six to 60 days before departure to Malaysia. Travel insurance is also not a prerequisite for foreigners entering the country.

The wearing of masks outdoors is optional but still mandatory indoors, including in shopping malls, offices, public transportation and e-hailing rides.

Tourism Malaysia Organises First Roadshow In Bangladesh After The Border Reopens

 

DHAKA, 5 June 2022 – Malaysia finally lifted sanctions on its border on 1^st April 2022, effectively ending all travel restrictions into the country. Taking advantage of this new development, Tourism Malaysia has decided to launch its first roadshow to two major cities in Bangladesh from 2^nd to 7^th June 2022, after a two-year hiatus.

The roadshow kicks off in the city of Dhaka, followed by Chattrogram. The mission is headed by Mr. Syed Yahya Syed Othman, Senior Director of the Strategic Planning Division, Tourism Malaysia together with Malaysia’s tourism fraternity which consists of five (5) travel agents and two (2) health industry organisations.

Bangladesh continues to be one of Malaysia's top market sources, with 179,000 arrivals (+19.3 per cent) in 2019. Aside from instilling confidence in Bangladeshis to return to Malaysia, the roadshow aims to provide a platform for the industry community to bounce back and steer the tourism sector back to its former glory, if not better. "This is an excellent time to return to Bangladesh, and the timing of this roadshow is ideal. The resumption of scheduled international flights from Bangladesh coincides with Malaysia's reopening of its international borders," said Mr. Syed Yahya Syed Othman.

"We are thrilled and excited to welcome Bangladeshi tourists back on exciting, new value-driven, and action-packed itineraries to experience Malaysia’s best and latest. Malaysia has opened its shores for quarantine-free travel on 1^st April 2022 to welcome fully-vaccinated international travellers. AirAsia launches Suvarnabhumi-Kuala Lumpur service

 

AirAsia Thailand commences its first international route from Suvarnabhumi Airport today, becoming the only low-cost carrier to fly between Suvarnabhumi and Kuala Lumpur.

The route is available twice daily.

AirAsia Thailand’s CEO, Santisuk Klongchaiya, pointed out that AirAsia’s flight base at Suvarnabhumi Airport has been very well received. At present, the carrier operates three domestic routes from Suvarnabhumi, flying to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi.

He said: “Our first international route being served from Suvarnabhumi Airport is a positive and exciting development, especially as it’s the popular Suvarnabhumi-Kuala Lumpur route. On top of Suvarnabhumi Airport being a major transit hub with a variety of further options for flights, arrivals from Kuala Lumpur will also have AirAsia’s extensive network of low fare domestic routes to continue on with. Thailand is welcoming fully vaccinated visitors and no longer requires Covid-19 testing or quarantine, so we are confident this new route will be very well received.”

AirAsia also operates daily return flights between Bangkok Don Mueang and Kuala Lumpur.
