MALACCA: A city councillor here has mooted the idea of wedding receptions and marriages at pristine beaches and beautiful parks of Malacca as a new tourism product.
Malacca Historic City Council member Ronald Gan said the National Registration Department (NRD) was willing to allow its officers to register marriages at beaches or parks, provided the families of both the groom and bride pay a fee for the outdoor service. He said the families would also have to make transport arrangements for the NRD officer.
“I came to know about this service last week when making wedding arrangements for a good friend,” he said after meeting state NRDdirector Mohd Sharil Neoh Abdullah at his office here yesterday. “Based on this service provided by the NRD, I have drafted a proposal to turn outdoor weddings into a tourism product,” he said, adding that local councils in Australia and the United States also promoted outdoor wedding packages.
“We have beautiful beaches and parks, especially the botanical garden in Ayer Keroh, for such ceremonies,” he said. Gan would meet wedding planners in the state to get their views. “Such wedding packages can complement Malacca’s status as a green technology state and a popular holiday destination,” he said.
Gan said that he had listed out to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam the salient points of the proposal and how it could generate revenue. “I will follow up with a more comprehensive proposal by including the input from the wedding planners,” he said.
