KANGAR, March 12 (Bernama) -- The government will take advantage of the unique Perlis easterly wind festival (PAT) season, which is seen to have vast potential in drawing tourists, especially from abroad, says Tourism and Culture Deputy Minister, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

She said there was opportunity to attract more tourists through the festival, judging by the increasing number of foreign tourists who were now choosing to stay at homestay accommodations registered with the ministry.

"Through the 'Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia Dekat Je' campaign, we will entice the foreign tourists to experience the 'easterly wind' festival which focuses on the lifestyle, culture and food of the past farming community in Perlis.

"This festival, a tourism product synonymous with the state will indirectly, help lure tourists to Perlis and make up for the interesting places which the state lacks," she added.

Mas Ermieyati was speaking to reporters after the launch of PAT 2016 by State Assembly Speaker, Hamdan Bahari representing Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azlan Man, at Kampung Padang Benta in Simpang Empat here Saturday.

The three-day festival which began on Friday, showcases farmers' activities in the 1950s and 60s, as an effort to promote Perlis as a tourist destination for local and foreign tourists.
