Tourist Arrivals In Terengganu Doubled In First Half Of 2013

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- Tourist arrivals in Terengganu had doubled in the first half of 2013 compared to last year, due to increased tourism activities in conjunction with Visit Terengganu Year 2013 (VTY2013).

Various activities have been organised at popular tourist spots like Tasik Kenyir, Kuala Berang and Pulau Perhentian to attract more tourists to this East Coast state.

State Tourism, Culture, Communications and Multimedia Committee deputy chairman, Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar said Tasik Kenyir recorded 200,055 tourist arrivals in the first six months of this year compared to 200,015 for the whole of 2012.

"Pulau Perhentian recorded 80,000 tourist arrivals in the first half of 2013 from 65,000 for the whole of last year, a 30 per cent increase.

"Tourism has benefited the people of Terengganu in many ways including in the hotel, food, retail and services sectors," he said after opening the Terengganu Tourism International Conference at Hotel Permai, here, today. Also present was VTY2013 Secretariat head, Ahmad Fathil Abdul Ghani, and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Yahaya Ibrahim.

Wan Hakim, who is also Air Putih assemblyman, said the tourism sector had indirectly reduced poverty rates in the state from between 60 and 70 per cent a decade ago to four per cent now.
