Tourism Promotion Via Air Accessibility, Key Factor For Sarawak

KUCHING, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The tourism ministry needs to make it clear to regional airline operators, especially Malaysia Airlines and its subsidiary MASwings, that their social responsibility includes tourism promotion and not just profit-making, said Santubong Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Deputy Home Minister, said air accessibility to Sarawak was a key factor in promoting the tourism industry, which was the third largest contributor to the national economy at present.

"It is unfortunate the airlines only look at the bottom line, that is, the dollar sign at the end of their account statement instead of the national account to jointly promote tourism with the stakeholders, which is not right," he said officiating at the Sarawak Homestay Association's Aidilfitri 2013 open house here today.

While AirAsia and Malindo Air also fly to the state, he said, the national airline should be aware of its bigger role in its efforts to fly the regional sector from the various destinations throughout the country.
