Songkran to make a big splash

TUMPAT: The Tourism Ministry plans to make the Thai New Year celebrations of Songkran into a major event in the tourism calendar.

The festival also blends in with the ministry’s branding efforts of the “Malaysia Truly Asia” promotion, said minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen after opening the Kelantan-level of Songkran, which was held earlier to accommodate the campaigning process for the May 5 general election. A host of activities were held at Wat Sukhontharam in Kampung Kubang Panjang here.
Among those present were Kelantan Malaysia-Thai Association chairman Chot Cha Chan, Thai Consul-General Jackrid Kanjanasoon, who is based in Kota Baru, the ministry’s special adviser Sulaiman Ismail, Malaysian-Thai Association national president Senator Datuk Boon Soom Inong and Tumpat Umno division head Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar.
The guests were treated to a cultural performance by a local Thai troupe, which also danced to Malay, Chinese and Indian tunes, a beauty pageant and Thai cuisine as well as snacks.
Songkran is a major festival among the Thais as it marks the Thai new year. The occasion is used to pay tribute to Buddhist monks, parents, senior citizens and to strengthen family bonds. In Thailand, it has grown into a major commercial event as well as a tourism attraction.
