KOTA KINABALU: A monumental underwater clean-up of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park here over 168 consecutive hours resulted in 3,171kg of trash being collected and a new Guinness World Records.
A total of 134 local and international divers took part in the longest underwater clean-up organised by Astro Kasih. The marathon effort which started on April 6 ended at 8.30am yesterday.
British diver Krystle Stevens said although she was proud to be part of the effort, she was sad at what the volunteer divers found. “It has been a tiring but fulfilling week. I am amazed by the beautiful beaches and rich marine life but sad to see the rubbish,” she said.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjunsaid it was important for everyone to work together to build a clean, sustainable and healthy environment that is free from any pollution.
“Although I am proud to see Sabah being elevated in the eyes of the world with the record set today, more can be done to help keep our sea clean,” he said after witnessing the certification presentation from Guinness World Records adjudicator Kirsty Bennett to Astro CEO Datuk Rohana Rozhan yesterday.
In the challenge, participants conducted a total of 1,120 dives at 224 dive locations surrounding the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.
Rohana said Sabah was chosen for the challenge because of its unique and rich natural resources. She revealed she had spent the first 10 years of her life in the state.
