The Bornean Frog Race 2013

The race itself is modeled after the annually-held and highly successful “Bird Race”, and would entail participants going up one or more trails at the Serapi foothills within Kubah National Park, for a period of 2 hours, and returning with digital images of amphibians.

Amphibians comprise some 6,771 species, and living representatives include frogs, salamanders and caecilians. From a conservation standpoint, it is remarkable that a large proportion of the world’s amphibians- a third of the known species, are recognized as being under threat.

On 27 April 2013, conservationists in several countries will highlight the threatened status of amphibians via a series of activities aimed at arousing public awareness of the world’s disappearing amphibians. See www.savethefrogs.com.

Our activities on 27 April will centre around raising public awareness on the need for conservation of the frogs and other amphibians of Sarawak and of South-east Asia, and we proudly take part with our international colleagues in activities to draw awareness of the declining amphibians. This will be the second year we are organizing this event, the first, in 2012, at Camp Permai, Santubong.

The “frog race”, which will include talks on amphibians and their conservation, exhibits of sights and sounds, all open to the general public, and based at the Kubah National Park, Matang, close to Kuching city, the capital of Sarawak State, Malaysia, is planned for the day.

Awards (books on amphibians and natural history ,book vouchers and special prizes) and certificates (jointly by UNIMAS and Kubah National Park, SFC, bearing the logos of UNIMAS and SFC will be given to participants for the following categories:

1. Most number of amphibian species found
2. Rarest amphibian found
3. Best amphibian photo taken

Photo vouchers will be required, and requirements from participant would be a nominal registration fees of RM 25 (Students), RM 30 (Non-students), RM 50 (Foreigner), a digital camera with appropriate lenses, flash systems and download cables.
