Langkawi's duty-free status will be maintained to boost tourism


LANGKAWI: Pulau Langkawi's duty-free status will remain, announced Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir who is also Langkawi MP said this willhelp attract spending by mainlanders on the island, while at the same time boosting the tourism industry there.

"The duty-free status will be maintained to attract mainlanders to spend here.

"This will also boost the tourism industry on the island," he said in his speech to over 3,000 people gathered at the Hari Raya open house at the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) sports complex.



However, he also said the ruling that the total amount spent on duty-free item(s) must not exceed RM500 for tax exemption reasons will also remain.
