Celebrating 15 Years of Formula 1 in Malaysia with the New Royal Selangor Trophy

Celebrating its 15th edition this year, the 2013 Formula 1TM PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix is a not-to-be missed event for motor racing fans as it offers a massive package of world-class racing, shopping, partying, entertainment and an adrenaline pumping concert featuring international rock legend Guns N’ Roses.

To mark this special year, the Sepang International Circuit has commissioned Royal Selangor, Malaysia’s leading pewter brand to once again be the creative force behind the design and construction of the 2013 Formula 1TM PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix trophy. Royal Selangor has designed and crafted trophies for 12 of the 15 years and this year’s trophy will see a new and exciting design.  The trophy comprises eight faceted pillars forming a circle and mounted on a timber block, symbolising the essence of F1 – speed and sound. Crafted entirely in pewter, the twisted pillars capture the quick movement of the race and unifying spirit of the sporting event.

At the unveiling of the new trophy design, Executive Director of Royal Selangor Marketing, Chen Tien Yue said, “This year’s trophy expresses the excitement of the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix with the sights, sounds and exhilaration of the race that is reflected in its unique form.”

“We are happy to be working with SIC again, especially for the 15th race.  As a brand known for its heritage of design and craftsmanship, Royal Selangor is proud to be contributing to this milestone for Malaysia,” he added.
Looking back at the history, on March 9 1999, Sepang International Circuit was officially launched by the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Malaysia hosted first Formula 1 race, the 1999 PETRONAS Malaysian Grand Prix on October 17 1999.
Since the establishment of SIC, motorsports in Malaysia has never been the same again. Formula 1 has lifted Malaysia to a new plane in the International arena and generated a new interest for the sports.

The 2013 Formula 1TM PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix is set to be another hot affair between fiercely contested on-track battle and the world’s best drivers.
Malaysia will host Round 2 of this season’s 19-leg Formula 1 World Championship at Sepang International Circuit from March 22 to 24. The new season will open with the Australian Grand Prix on the preceding weekend at the Albert Park in Melbourne.

Eleven teams and 22 drivers will be competing for this season with Germany’s Sebastian Vettel gunning for his fourth world drivers’ crown and the Red Bull Racing Team defending its Constructors’ title this year. The teams include the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team and Caterham F1 Team, all two having a close association with Malaysia.

Recording an attendance of 120,000 spectators for 3 days last year, SIC is hoping to woo in some 90,000 fans on the Race Day itself or more than 130,000 over 3 days. “I am hoping that more fans will come on Race Day this time around as we are expecting to have at least 40% of foreigners and 60% locals’ spectators on Sunday,” said SIC Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Razlan Razali.

Carrying a promotional theme of shop, party, race and more, the 2013 Formula 1TM PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix will be an exhilarating affair of world-class racing, entertainment and parties; and an unrivalled experience of shopping extravaganza and enjoying Malaysia’s scenic beauty and tropical weather.

After 15 years of hosting Formula 1, this year is a very special occasion for SIC as Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsports, with fans both domestic and international. This shows that Malaysia’s participation and involvement with the F1 World Championship has grown broader and more matured; reflecting the massive impact that the series has on us as a nation.
