KUALA LUMPUR: Japan is hoping to welcome 160,000 Malaysian tourists to its shores this year a 23% increase from last year.
Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) executive director Motonari Adachi said Malaysian tourist arrivals in his country recorded an unprecedented high of 130,267 last year. “Among other efforts, we will promote Japan at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair 2013 and hold seminars for travel agents in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu,” he told reporters at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here yesterday.
MATTA has named Japan as its “Favourite Destination Partner” for the MATTA Fair 2013, to be held at the PWTC from today until Sunday.
MATTA president Datuk Mohd Khalid Harun said he was impressed to see Japan recover from the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 and continue spurring on its tourism industry. “We declared Japan as our favourite destination partner because of JNTO's never-ending support,” he said.
JNTO executive vice-president Kenji Jinbo said it hoped that more Malaysians would visit Japan as it would soon be spring when the cherry blossoms or sakura were in full bloom. “We hope more Malaysians will come to our country and experience this beautiful season,” he said. Japan, he said, had also launched a travel guide for Muslim visitors, containing a list of halal restaurants and mosques in major cities in the country.

Among the Japanese exhibitors to be featured in Hall 1 at the PWTC are the JNTO, Tokyo Disney Resort, Central Japan, Sendai/Tohoku and Universal Studios Japan.
The Japan booth will set up a counter to answer public enquiries about visa application procedures. For a taste of Japanese culture, visitors will also be entertained with the lively Yosakoi dance at the MATTA stage.
A mobile phone application, which helps visitors find their way around the fair, can be downloaded for free at the App Store or Google Play. The MATTA Fair 2013, to feature over 1,100 exhibition booths, will offer travellers exciting travel and tour packages, hotel accommodation and airline tickets.
