Malaysia will be hosting the Kids Golf World Champion-ships — the first to be held in Asia — at the Saujana Golf and Country and Glenmarie Golf and Country from Dec 3 to 7.
Royal Sporting House (RSH) golf division general manager David Leow said they had bid for the championships three years ago. “China and Japan had also submitted their proposals to the US Kids Golf Foundation. But Malaysia won the bid because of the wide usage of English as well as our facilities. The foundation favoured Malaysia as both the golf courses had hotel facilities. However, we took some time to firm up the other details.
“Today we are proud to announce that the championships will be a reality. We also have the rights to organise the event for 2013 and 2014,’’ said David. To make the championships a big success, RSH have teamed up with Concept Collaboration and Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). The event is also sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA).
MGA president Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor said it was an honour for Malaysia to host the prestigious event. “It will be an excellent platform for our junior golfers to compete with some of the best players from the other regions,’’ said Mohd Anwar.
The championships, catering for juniors aged from five to 18, are expected to attract about 500 participants. A one-day team event based on the Ryder Cup format will also be played. Malaysia, as the host country, will lead a team comprising local players and invited players from Australasia to compete against a team with American and European played aged from 13-18.
