50 marine parks nationwide by 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry aims to have 50 marine parks in the country by 2020 in a bid to conserve more marine life. Deputy minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said Tuesday there were currently 42 marine parks in the country.

"The Kedah state government has agreed in principle to gazette three islands - Pulau Songsong, Pulau Bidan and Pulau Telur as marine parks," he told reporters after launching the International Day for Biological Diversity celebration at Aquaria KLCC here.

He added that Sabah will gazette an island as a marine park while the Perak state government agreed to gazette about four islands in the Kepulauan Sembilan archipelago.
