Genting World Lion Dance Championship to take place in July

Resorts World Genting will be hosting its Genting World Lion Dance Champion-ship 2012 at Arena of Stars from July 20 to 22. Prizes worth up to USD30,000 (RM90,000) will be given away to the winning teams.

The championship is held once every two years with the objectives of improving and enhancing the standard of lion dance performances around the world and inspiring young and talented participants to challenge themselves to bring the dance to greater heights.

Jointly organised by the Selangor & Federal Territory Lion & Dragon Dance Association, the championship has attracted teams from many countries outside of Malaysia including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, the USA, Australia, and Mauritius. In conjunction with the organiser’s 20th anniversary, a maximum of three teams from each participating country will be invited to take part in the championship.

The top three teams of the 15th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2011, namely Kun Seng Keng Lion and Dragon Association Muar (also the champion of all past Genting World Lion Dance Championships since 1994), Maha Bohdi Society Tawau and Pertubuhan Tarian Singa dan Naga Hong Teck Alor Star, Kedah will be representing Malaysia to compete with other lion dance teams. Nine teams with the highest points from the preliminary rounds will qualify to the Grand Final on July 22.

The champion team will be awarded a cash prize of USD10,000 (RM30,000) along with trophy and medals while the runners-up will receive USD6,000 (RM18,000) and USD3,000 (RM9,000), also with trophy and medals. The remaining finalists will receive USD1,000 (RM3,000) cash prize and a trophy each. East and West Lion King trophies will also be awarded to the best teams from Asia and Western countries.

The preliminary rounds will be held on July 20 and 21, from 1pm to 9pm. Entry tickets are redeemable at the I-Kiosks located at the Resort. The grand final will be held on July 22 from 1pm to 6pm.
