MyCEB introduces green programme to reduce carbon footprint

The Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) launched the Malaysia Business Tourism Green Programme yesterday in support of the government’s commitment to offset carbon emissions by 40 per cent by 2020. As part of the programme, event delegates contribute a minimum of US$10, which will be channelled to the Forest Research Institute Malaysia’s tree-planting efforts as well as other tree-planting initiatives across the country. “Our target is to plant 1,000 trees by 2011 year-end,” said MyCEB’s CEO Zulkefli Sharif.

The programme was launched at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the venue for the World Congress of Accountants 2010 (WCOA). WCOA, which runs from November 8 to 11, is the first international congress to support this initiative. WCOA co-hosts, Malaysian Institute of Accountants and International Federation of Accountants, have pledged to contribute to the planting of at least 200 trees. WCOA is the largest international congress in Malaysia this year with 6,043 delegates. Nine international association meetings are taking place this month. These events are expected to attract over 10,000 conference delegates to Malaysia and inject in excess of RM62 million (US$20 million) in terms of international visitor expenditure, said Sharif.
