MAH Penang: Regulation a good step

THE Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang chapter has come out in support of moves to regulate beach and water activities along the Batu Ferringhi beach front. Chapter president Marco Battistotti said moves to secure the safety and comfort of hotel guests and beach goers was a positive step. He said the beach was public property but certain things were not allowed. “Aside from it being a council and federal regulation, it is also a basic rule worldwide to not allow motorised vehicles on the beach,” he added.

Battistotti said the move to clear the beach of horses and beach buggies was part of the plan to regulate Penang beach facilities in a proper way. “We have been talking about regulating beach activities for many years now and part of that is to clear non-permitted activities from the beach. “Aside from motorised vehicles, the plan is also to provide safe swimming areas for guests and beach patrons so I hope we can see water activities being better regulated with designated pick-up points in the future,” he said. He added that the Penang Municipal Council was looking into the building of massage huts on the beach to provide space for masseurs to conduct their businesses.

Battistotti, however, said MAH Penang was not out for a full ban on beach activities, be it horse rides or buggies. “We understand that hotel guests and people going to beach want to have certain facilities but they need to be regulated, licensed and most importantly, insured. “It must be done within the confines of the law and a way to do this could be to provide a restricted area in which these activities can take place,” he added.
