KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians performing umrah may soon be equipped with a Malaysian batik' travel kit' by the end of this year. This initiative aims to promote Malaysian batik in the global arena, said Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohd Zamri Mat Zain.
The items in the travel kit can likely be shirts, `telekung (prayer garment)', `jubah (long robe)', and scarves to be worn during the pilgrims' ziarah (visiting) programmes. This effort can also help 800 local batik entrepreneurs further develop their businesses.
The initiative is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation and three associations offering umrah packages. The three are the Association of Umrah and Haj Travel Agents (Papuh), the Bumiputera Tourism Operating Companies Malaysia Association (Bumitra) and the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta).
"We
will see a big impact in batik promotion. Three entities (offering umrah
packages) will collaborate to make this happen.
"I
believe the collective effort would encourage better results," he said,
adding that this initiative was following an earlier announcement that civil
servants must wear Malaysian batik on Thursdays.
Mohd Zamri stated that he would soon discuss the possibility of having a similar approach to promote batik Malaysia by pilgrims performing the Haj. "We have about 32,000 Malaysians expected to perform Haj next year, and they can proudly wear Malaysian batik in Makkah and Madinah," he said.
