Melaka, Holland to continue forging tourism interest


MELAKA, June 15 (Bernama) -- The Melaka state government will continue to enhance bilateral relations with Holland in various fields especially in tourism to promote Melaka and lure more visitors from that country.

Melaka Housing, Local Government, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew said Melaka and Holland shared many similarities especially from the historical heritage and the diplomatic relations between the two parties was established way back in 1641.

"Melaka itself is a site of Dutch government historical heritage during the colonial days, has become a tourism icon and based on record, Dutch tourist arrivals to Melaka last year was around 21,000.

"We at the state government level will continue to preserve and conserve the historical remains as assets for the tourism industry and for viewing by the future generations," he told reporters after opening the Holland Days Festival 2019 in Melaka at Stadthuys Complex in Bandar Hilir here today.

In the programme, the Dutch government via its Ambassador to Malaysia, Karin Mossenlechner presented three cattle replicas to the Melaka state government as a symbol of the friendship between the two parties.

The three cattle replicas were placed at the windmill in front of Stadthuys Square here representing the three major races in the country namely, Malay, Chinese and Indian.

Elaborating further, Tey said apart from that, Melaka is also interested in learning from Holland on flood management as the country has managed its low lying land from getting flooded.

Meanwhile, Karin said the Melaka-Dutch Day is one of the collaborations and efforts to promote the Melaka tourism attractions to Dutch citizens.

She said Dutch people love to walk in the city and stroll the streets, while exploring the shops and Melaka has a beautiful city centre.

"We can see Melaka is a charming city with lots of beautiful destinations and icons that can attract Dutch people and Europeans to visit Melaka. I too am surprise to see lots of Dutch people here in this programme," she said.
