Infrastructure upgrade being planned to draw visitors to Songsong Island - exco

ALOR SETAR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The Kedah government plans to make improvements to the state’s infrastructure in efforts to draw visitors to Songsong Island’s historical sites and two other islands in the Yan district namely Bidan and Telur Islands.

State Youth and Sports, Tourism, Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris said the state government was aware that the three islands have their own unique history and could be developed as tourist destinations to give Kedah tourism sector a boost.

As such he said Kedah Tourism Sdn Bhd had been working with federal government agencies namely Tourism Malaysia Kedah and the Kedah Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture (Motac) in efforts to realise the plan.

"We (state government) are seriously thinking of making this a reality and an effective collaborative strategy is necessary as the upgrading works would be very costly," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Last Monday Bernama reported that Songsong Island should be developed as a historical travel destination as its unique history and heritage could attract tourists to visit the island.
