First Penang Homestay Competition Offers RM20,000 Cash Prizes

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 10 (Bernama) -- For the first time, the Penang government will be organising a homestay competition, offering a total of RM20,000 in cash prizes.

State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said today the homestays in 10 settlements, with each settlement having from 10 to 30 operators, would be evaluated during the competition period for a month from March 1.

"The competition is aimed at encouraging the operators to ensure that their homestays are in the best condition to draw more foreign tourists to choose the homestay packages offered in the state," he told reporters here.

He advised the homestay operators to ensure that their premises were always in a state of readiness to welcome visitors.

Law said the homestays to be assessed included the Teluk Bahang Homestay; Sungai Sembilang Homestay; Pulau Betong Homestay; Pulau Chenaam Homestay; Sungai Setar Homestay; Sungai Duri Homestay and Pulau Aman Homestay.

"No registration is necessary for participation in the competition," he said. The evaluation would be based on aspects such as hygiene, annual income, number of visitors, decorations and services.
