KUALA LUMPUR: Domestic destinations are to get a bigger spotlight at the upcoming MATTA Fair.
The fair’s organising chairman Jayakumar S. Sinnadurai said this followed the favourable reception at the last MATTA fair in 2014.
“Tourism Malaysia is coming in on a bigger scale because they saw that domestic tourism was encouraging during the last fair,” he said, adding that Tourism Malaysia had bought an additional 10 booths for the upcoming fair.
“A lot of the tour agencies managed to sell many domestic packages,” he added. Jayakumar said that in the current situation, more Malaysians could opt for domestic destinations.
“The US currency has gone up against the Malaysian currency, so for travellers, especially families, travelling to US destinations would be costly. “We are expecting them to change their holiday destinations to Asian countries or within the country,” he said.
MATTA, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, is also giving a RM700 ex-gratia for each booth purchased by its members for the fair at the Putra World Trade Centre from March 13 to March 15. To qualify for the rebate, members must have taken part in the last fair.
There is also a RM700 discount per booth for tour agencies which have been participating in three consecutive fairs, including the upcoming fair.
Triways Travel Network (M) Sdn Bhd group managing director Mohd Akil Yusof said the ex-gratia and discount were good incentives. “Many of the tour agencies have been participating in the fairs for more than five years, so we welcome the incentives,” he said. He added that for 2015, travel operators needed to be smarter in tailoring packages to the tough economic climate.
