Spotlight on KL Gallery and other landmarks soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Gallery building was lit up with awe-inspiring LED lights during an event to showcase the city’s image and character.

The event was part of phase one of the Light Up KL project, a sustainability initiative under the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Masterplan, jointly organised by City Hall (DBKL) and Philips Malaysia. Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said both parties hoped to transform Kuala Lumpur into a vibrant city at night, especially in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2014.

“We have learnt from famous cities that are colourful and vibrant, such as Paris. They are lit up beautifully at night,” he said after a switching on ceremony at the gallery last night. “We hope to emulate that wonder and vibrancy in Kuala Lumpur, which will not only attract more tourists to come here, but also lure locals to come and take in the beauty of our city.”

The event saw the 115-year-old historical building, housing the KL City Gallery, lit up with LED lights that were sponsored by Philips. Philips would also sponsor the installation of LED lights at the KL Library building by November.

Ahmad Phesal said DBKL was planning to install LED lights along Medan Pasar to Sogo shopping complex by December. “We also plan to install similar lights at other historical and heritage buildings around the city.”

He noted that although the initial costs of installing the lights would be costly, the LEDs would reduce power costs as the lights were longer lasting. “We are not only transforming Kuala Lumpur into a vibrant and colourful city but also keeping an eye on long-term savings.”
