First homegrown talent announced for Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in October

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 August 2016 – Malaysia’s top three ranked players, Kelly Tan, Michelle Koh and Ainil Bakar, have been awarded qualifying exemptions to this year’s Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) from 27 – 30 October.

The coveted places were awarded to the three ‘Malaysian Angels’ in acknowledgement of their continued progress as professional golfers and will see them spearheading the local challenge against a star-studded LPGA field, set to include defending champion Jessica Korda. All three players are graduates of the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Development Programme.
Malaysia’s top ranked player and LPGA Tour regular, Kelly Tan, is currently ranked 159 in the world rankings* and 73 on the LPGA Money List. Such has been her progress on Tour, she may gain automatic qualification for the tournament and not be dependent on the exemption place. The 22-year old from Johor will be looking to build on her result at last year’s tournament, where she finished in 61st spot.
Michelle Koh can also expect a hero’s welcome as she makes her return to Malaysian soil. Like Tan, the 26-year old will be coming into the tournament off the back of the 2016 Rio Olympics, where the duo will make history by being the first female golfers to represent Malaysia at the Olympics.
Having finished in 70th place on the East Course last year, she will be hoping to improve on the result and continue breaking down barriers in a year in which she has already cemented her place in Malaysian sporting history.
Koh said: “Thank you to Sime Darby for the opportunity to play once again. The tournament is something I look forward to every single year. With Kelly and I representing Malaysia at the Rio Olympics, it’s a great year for golf in Malaysia, and I’m sure everyone is excited. It’s always a great experience to play in front of the home fans and I’m looking forward to seeing them in October.”
At the same time, Ainil Bakar continues to go from strength to strength as she constantly strives to improve her game. Having turned professional in 2012, Bakar competes on the Ladies European Tour and Ladies Asian Golf Tour. She said: “Having come through the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Development Program, I’ve always seen this tournament as a highlight of my year. Of course, I am thankful to Sime Darby for the opportunity to compete once again. It’s truly a privilege to be able to return home and compete on Malaysian soil.”
The three players have been beneficiaries of the Sime Darby Foundation’s (YSD) funding programme, with Tan being awarded YSD’s STAR scholarship in 2011 to pursue a six-month accredited college preparatory course and full-time golf programme at the world’s most prestigious golf institution, Pendleton School at IMG Academies in Florida. Bakar, meanwhile, received funding support for two years to compete on the Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) and the Ladies European Tour (LET).
The three golfers are the first Malaysians to receive exemptions for the tournament. A minimum of two additional places will be made available for Malaysian players at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia National Qualifying Tournament slated for late September, along with a new category of ‘Amateur Juniors’ which will see the country’s top two junior amateur ranked players given the opportunity to test themselves against the best in the world.
Speaking about the first sponsor exemption places awarded, Steven Thielke, Chairman of Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Tournament Committee and Chief Executive Officer of KLGCC, said, “The Tournament Committee extends its sincerest congratulations to Kelly, Michelle, and Ainil on being awarded the exemption places. The tournament prides itself on the support that it has lent to the development of young talent in Malaysia over the years and these three players are prime examples of it. We also wish Kelly and Michelle every success at the Rio Games later this month where we will follow their progress with great interest.”
The seventh edition of the US$ 1.8 million purse Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will take place on the East course at KLGCC from 27 - 30 October 2016. 78 players, made up of 64 players from the LPGA tour and fourteen sponsor exemptions will compete in the 72-hole stroke play, no cut tournament.

KOTA DAMANSARA: Those interested in Muslim-friendly travel packages and travelling to Islamic destinations can have a field day at the upcoming MATTA Selangor Islamic Travel Fair 2016 (MASITF).

Malaysia Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Selangor chapter chairman Mohd Akil Mohd Yusof said that MASITF will feature tour and travel companies catering to the halal market and Islamic destinations.
“The twice-a-year MATTA Fair is a signature travel fair for the region but what we want to do now is to make Selangor and Malaysia the hub for Islamic travel fairs,” said Akil during the press conference held on Thursday to announce the fair.
He said that as the fair would be focused on Muslim-friendly packages and destinations, there will be a focus on helping the public from being cheated onumrah and haj packages.
“We will educate the public on the latest issues regarding umrah and haj, especially on being aware of errant operators,” he said.
He said that visitors to the fair can expect discounts of between 20% and 50% for packages and airfares.
He said that for now, there were more than 53 booths already filled by tour and travel companies, airlines and tourism boards.
Among the airlines participating in the fair, said Akil, were Malindo Air, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, All Nippon Airways and Uzbezkistan Airways.
He added that MATTA Selangor was hoping for more than 50,000 visitors for the three-day fair.
On whether there will be travel packages to Turkey being offered at the fair, Akil said the country was still being promoted as a travel destination despite the recent attempted coup and attacks.
“It is very sad, what has happened in Turkey.
“We have to continue to support them and many major international airlines are still flying there,” he said, adding that the country was bouncing back from the recent events well.
MASITF will be held from Aug 26 to 28 at Encorp Strand Mall in Kota Damansara.
Exhibitors interested in participating can contact MATTA Selangor at 03-5511 1370 or secretariat.selangor@matta.org.my for information.

Tickets for October's F1 Malaysian GP in hot demand

Malaysian Grand Prix. - S. S. KANESAN / The Star
KUALA LUMPUR: Tickets have been selling like hot cakes since the Petronas Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix has been rescheduled from March to October.

The Malaysian Grand Prix was one of the few races that had been moved to new dates in the International Automobile Federation (FIA) calendar shake-up for this year.
The Malaysian leg, often the second race of the year, has been moved for the first time since 2001 from March to Sept 30-Oct 2 and is now the 16th race in the 21-race calendar.
It’s now sandwiched between the Singapore Grand Prix (Sept 18) and Japanese Grand Prix (Oct 9).
“This year’s race falls within a very unique time frame – just two weeks after the Singapore Grand Prix and less than a month before Malaysia host the MotoGP,” said SIC chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali at the Malaysian Grand Prix launch here on Tuesday.
The surge in demand for tickets has led Razlan to believe that they can achieve their overall spectator target of 85,000 over three days – which will be a 5% increase from last year’s total when the race was held in March.
“There’s a surge in agent sales in the top 10 countries – Australia, United Kingdom, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Japan, Thailand, United States, Sweden and Finland ... which our international spectators are mostly from,” said Razlan.
“To date, we have hit a 272% increase in sales from the top 10 countries compared to last year.
“This will undoubtedly be a boon for tourism ... and can contribute to the Ministry of Tourism’s target of 30.5mil tourist arrivals.”

Fourth Round Of WAITGC 2016 To Tee Off In Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, 1ST AUGUST 2016 – International and local amateur golfers are all geared up to compete in the fourth qualifying round of the World Amateur Inter Team Golf Championship (WAITGC) 2016 in Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 25 team from Australia, Brunei, Singapore, Japan, UAE and Malaysia are participating in the four-day event, which kicked off today at the Kota Permai Golf & Country Club and Templer Park Country Club.

Kota Permai Golf & Country Club is the perfect getaway for golf and recreational pleasure. It is situated in Kota Kemuning, an up-market suburb of Shah Alam ideally located along Kesas Highway linking the city of Kuala Lumpur to the bustling port of Klang. Kota Permai is only 30 minutes from Kuala Lumpur’s CBD and 35 minutes from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang. Kota Permai has hosted numerous tournaments including the Maybank Malaysian Open which is sanctioned by both the European and Asian Tours, as well as the World Cup Qualifying round, the Volvo Masters and most recently, the Selangor Worldwide Masters which is another Asian Tour event.

The fourth qualifying round will continue at Templer Park Country Club. Set amidst the evergreen Templer Park Forest Reserve and against the backdrop of the majestic Bukit Takun limestone hill, Templer Park Country Club ranks as one of the most scenic yet challenging golf experiences in Malaysia. Designed by acclaimed golf course architect Kentaro Sato with inputs from veteran Japanese professional and World Golf Hall of Fame Masashi “Jumbo” Ozaki, the club was officially opened on 27 April 1991 – enchanting locals and expatriates alike with its tranquil natural setting and championship quality golf layout. Having been one of the earliest golf courses to open in that decade, Templer Park Country Club went on to score many firsts – it was the first Japanese-owned and managed golf club; the first to offer buggies and lady caddies in the country and holds the distinction of debuting the concept of night golfing with nine holes lighted after dark. The club also features regularly as a host venue on the fast-growing domestic Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour since 2012.

The last qualifying round of WAITGC 2016 will take place at two different golf courses in Sarawak in September.

Golf tourism has been identified as one of the key priority projects to increase the nation’s tourism contribution to the economy, and has in fact been underscored in the country’s Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). Last year, golf tourism receipts amounted to RM319 million, a significant contribution to Malaysia’s economy.

Since its debut in 1994, WAITGC has emerged as one of the most highly anticipated golfing events in the region. Organised by Tourism Malaysia, it attracts more than 500 participants every year. The homegrown event not only tests the golfing skills of the participants but also encourages them to discover the many colourful cultures and traditions in Malaysia, as well as the country’s delectable cuisines and fascinating tourist attractions.

WAITGC is managed by the Golf Club Managers Association of Malaysia (GCMAM) and sanctioned by the Malaysian Golf Association. For more information, please contact the WAITGC secretariat at 03-5633 2079/5634 2078 or visit www.waitgc.com.
