KUALA LUMPUR: The annual Sarawak Regatta will be merrier this year with 32 of the world's best wakeboarders taking part. The Sarawak Wakeboard World Cup championship a water surface event combining water skiing, snow boarding and surfing skills will pit competitors from 19 countries, including the United States, Australia, Britain and Argentina for US$95,000 (RM285,368) in prize money.
Australian Harley Clifford, the men's world champion, and Raimi Merritt, the women's world champion from the US, will be among the participants. The championship will be held for three days from Sept 15 at the Kuching Waterfront on the Sarawak River.
Sarawak Tourism and Heritage Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said hosting a world championship at the Sarawak Regatta would attract fans from other countries to visit the state. “The Sarawak Regatta began in 1872 during the reign of Rajah Brooke. Today, it is an annual fixture in the Sarawak tourism calendar and recognised as a major event to display the state's culture,” said Abang Johari, who earlier launched the Sarawak Regatta Packages during the MATTA Fair here yesterday.
Waterski and Wakeboard World Cup Sdn Bhd event director Hanifah Yoong said the event would leave a legacy of wakeboarding and water skiing in Sarawak. “We have started training young children in the sports. There are also plans for two national and regional events next year.”
