KOTA KINABALU: A bird watching festival in Sandakan is helping to create more international awareness about Sabah. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjunsaid the Borneo Bird Festival’s attendance at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) had doubled since the event began in 2009.
“And the number of visitors to the RDC, located near the renowned Sepilok orang utan rehabilitation centre, has nearly tripled between 2008 and 2010,” he said. Masidi said the number of visitors to the three-day festival, organised by Sabah Tourism, the Sabah Society and Borneo Bird Club, had increased from 1,500 in 2009 to 3,000 last year.
He said they included visitors from Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and the Philippines who tried to spot the 540 of the 742 bird species found in the country. He said the number of visitors to the RDC had gone up from 13,120 in 2008 to nearly 37,000 last year. “The festival has also enhanced awareness about the importance of preserving our rich bio-diversity for future generations.”
