KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) - In an effort to provide accurate information on Egypt and on the latest developments there to Malaysians, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) will visit the North African country for a week from tomorrow. Its president Datuk Khalid Harun said the visit would enable the members to see for themselves the real situation in Egypt and to facilitate channelling of information to Malaysians who wished to visit the country.
"This is a two-pronged promotion drive because at the same time, we want to show our support for Egypt's tourism sector which has been adversely affected following the political turbulence in January," he said when contacted by Bernama Wednesday. Egypt was in turmoil due to anti-government unrest which forced President Hosni Mubarak to step down after being in power for 30 years. Khalid who will be leading the 28-member MATTA delegation which includes media representatives, said the visit was organised at the invitation of four tourism operators in Egypt.
He said during the visit, MATTA would also take the opportunity to promote Malaysia as an exciting tourist destination to the travel agencies in Egypt. "With the cooperation between MATTA and the travel agencies in Egypt, we (both parties) hope to help improve both countries' tourism industry," he added. During the visit, the MATTA delegation is expected to visit the Egyptian Museum, Islamic Museum and Tahrir Square (scene of the massive anti-government demonstration on Jan 25) in Cairo, the Pyramids and Sphinx in Giza, and the historical sites in Alexandria.
