Langkawi targets high-spending UK travellers

Langkawi is stepping up efforts to attract higher-spending tourists from the UK, which was the island’s largest European source market in 2025, accounting for 128,226 hotel guests.

The Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) has identified the UK as a priority market as the island pursues its low-volume, high-value tourism strategy. The approach focuses on attracting tourists with greater spending capacity, longer stays and an interest in luxury, nature-based and experiential tourism, said LADA tourism manager Waffa Wahida Zainol.

The UK ranked third among Langkawi’s international source markets by number of hotel guests, behind India (407,867) and China (166,405). Poland (62,371) and France (61,140) were the next largest European markets.

Waffa shared that visitors from the UK who stay longer could be encouraged to explore a wider range of tourism products, generating greater economic benefits for the island. Target segments include luxury travellers, honeymooners, couples, retirees, adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts.

“Langkawi’s positioning as a UNESCO Global Geopark, complemented by its luxury resorts, pristine beaches, marine biodiversity, wellness offerings and rich local culture, provides a compelling proposition for the UK market,” added Waffa.

To strengthen its presence in the UK, LADA participated in Tourism Malaysia’s roadshows in Manchester on October 28 and London on October 30. Waffa and LADA corporate communications manager Lina Azlina met UK travel trade professionals to introduce the island’s tourism offerings and explore opportunities for industry partnerships.

The roadshows brought together Malaysian tourism industry representatives and European travel professionals for business-to-business meetings, presentations and travel mart sessions. They provided opportunities for Malaysian tourism businesses to connect with travel buyers and raise awareness of the country’s destinations and experiences.

“The UK market presents an important opportunity for Langkawi to connect with travellers looking for destinations that offer more than a conventional beach holiday,” Waffa said.

She added that the aim was to raise awareness of Langkawi’s nature, culture and tourism experiences among potential visitors while developing industry relationships that could generate future demand.

The roadshows also supported Malaysia’s wider tourism promotion efforts under the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, which aims to introduce the country’s destinations and experiences to international markets.
