GEORGE TOWN: After successfully welcoming Royal Caribbean's vessel Spectrum of the Seas on Saturday, the first international cruise two years after Covid-19, the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) is set to welcome two more cruise ships tomorrow.
Besides Spectrum of the Seas, Resort World Cruises' Genting Dream is also set to anchor here about 8am tomorrow.
Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng expressed confidence that SPCT's preparation to receive Genting Dream would be at a better level based on preparations and experience when it received the Spectrum of the Seas last Saturday.
"Tomorrow, Penang is set to witness the arrival of two cruise ships at the SPCT – Spectrum of the Seas and Genting Dream. Genting Dream will bring with it some 3,325 tourists while Spectrum of the Seas, 3,327 tourists.
"The arrival of 6,652 tourists in the state is set to accelerate the state's tourism industry in efforts towards economic rebound both at the state and national level.
"I am proud that Genting Dream will anchor in Penang from Singapore every Tuesday in the month of July while Spectrum of the Seas, every Tuesday and Saturday this month," he said.
Tan expressed hope that more cruise ships would call on SPCT this year. Last Saturday, SPCT was a hive of activity with the arrival of more than 3,000 tourists on the Spectrum of the Seas from Singapore.
It was the first international cruise to anchor here after two years.
Since March 18, 2020, following the lockdown imposed by the government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, no international cruises have anchored here.
