Hosting major sports events can boost tourism, says Tourism Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 -- The hosting of international sporting events has huge potential to boost the country's tourism industry, said Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (promotion) Datuk Mohmed Razip Hasan.

He said such events, which normally take place over several days and receive wide local and international media coverage, have indirectly succeeded in promoting Malaysia as an attractive tourist destination.

Among them are Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL), Malaysian Open Golf Championship, Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing (MotoGP), Ironman Langkawi and KL Tower International Towerthon.

"When we talk about organising sports, the scope is very wide. Not only motorsports, football or golf but also the organising of endurance sports like Ironman, LTdL. Their contributions are between five and 10 per cent.

"Like the Races of Malaysia. We can see the wide reach and publicity through the cooperation between SIC and Eurosport, and it (the event) is very special because now the Formula One (F1) and MotoGP racing seasons are over.

“So for sure, motorsports enthusiasts will be switching their attention to this event in Malaysia,” he told Bernama, adding that this can also help the country ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2020.

He said Tourism Malaysia was exploring opportunities for cooperation in organising more international sporting events.

Mohmed Razip was met during a special parade held in conjunction with the Races of Malaysia event featuring two international races -- the Endurance World Championship and the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) -- simultaneously at the Sepang International Circuit on Dec 13 to 15.

Races of Malaysia will feature a lineup of world-class endurance motorcycle and car racers, with wildcard entries by national racers such as Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah, Zaqhwan Zaidi, Adam Norrodin, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Mitchell Cheah.
