Sabah Fest to showcase warrior Mat Salleh’s story

KOTA KINABALU: The story of legendary warrior Mat Salleh will be the focus of the annual Sabah Fest 2016 that coincides with the month-long Kaamatan celebrations.
Mat Salleh, an ethnic Suluk-Bajau warrior who led an armed uprising against the colonial North Borneo British Chartered Company’s authority between 1895 and 1900, will have his adventures showcased under the theme “Gulu Gulu” (a long time ago).
The organiser, Sabah Tourism Board said in a statement that the show was a tribute to Sabah’s history and the highlights of Mat Salleh’s struggle during the colonial era.
Mat Salleh, accused by the British colonisers as a pirate and trouble maker, is widely regarded in Sabah as an early freedom fighter.
The three-day extravaganza will also highlight the state’s rich cultural heritage with a handicraft and traditional food showcase at the Sabah Culture and Arts Complex auditorium from April 29 to May 1.
Information is available on www.sabahfest.com while tickets for the stage performance are being sold at RM50. For more information, the public can contact Zachary Mobijohn at +6088 232 121 or e-mail info@sabahtourism.com.
