The city of Kuala Lumpur heats up as Merdeka Square comes alive with the sights and smells of local and international gastronomic delights at the inaugural KL Big Kitchen Festival 2015! Kuala Lumpur City Hall in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism & Culture, are proud to present this 3-day food festival that showcases the diversity of cuisine available in Kuala Lumpur.
Visitors will be spoilt for choice with the range of over 60 food counters serving up the best of the Malaysian gastronomic. The food will be freshly prepared and cooked throughout the day to ensure hygiene, quality and freshness.
The KL Big Kitchen offers visitors a treat as celebrity gastronomic personalities and chefs interact and demonstrate their skills in preparing the finest dishes. Alongside live cooking workshops and demonstrations of contemporary and traditional culinary techniques, there will be a host of cultural performances including dance and musical shows that truly portray the melting pot of cultures in Malaysia.
The diversity of cultures and cuisine is also reflected in the abundance of herbs and spices that are used in traditional recipes as well as contemporary dishes. The variety of herbs and spices available has their roots in Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, many of which have health properties. The KL Big Kitchen Festival will feature many of these traditional ingredients where visitors will get to taste, buy and learn how they are used in cooking some amazing dishes.
Other fun activities include food talks and gastronomic challenges, among them being the KL Signature Dish Competition, the KL Signature Mocktail Competition and the KL Big Kitchen Race. The winners of the KL Signature Dish and KL Signature Mocktail Drink will have their creations recognized as the official dish and drink of the city. While they will be each receiving trophies from the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur together with sponsored gifts, they will also have the honour of be recognised as the creators of the newest icons of Kuala Lumpur.

Food items may be purchased using
“Kupang”, which are specially designed tokens that will replace the
need for cash at the festival. The “Kupangs” will be available in
denominations of half Kupang, one Kupang and five Kupang. The Kupangs
can be purchased at the ticketing booth near the main entrance to the
festival venue.
The term “Kupang” is taken from the traditional Malay coin currency that was used in the Malay Peninsula since over a century ago.
