Billy Hurley IIIFor just the second time in his PGA TOUR career Billy Hurley III takes the 36-hole lead into the weekend. During the 2013-14 season Hurley led after the second round of The Greenbrier Classic. Hurley posted an even-par 140 over the final two rounds for a T4, which tied his career best performance on TOUR.
Coming into this week Hurley missed the cut at both the Frys.com Open and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
In the four-year history of the CIMB Classic, the second-round leader has twice converted the 36-hole lead into a win.
Hurley has a chance this weekend to be the first player in tournament history to make the CIMB Classic their inaugural victory on TOUR.
Hurley graduated from the Naval Academy in 2004 as one of the most decorated golfers in school history. He won seven collegiate titles at Navy, was named the 2004 Patriot League Golfer of the Year, garnered 2004 All-America
honors and was the recipient of the 2004 Byron Nelson Award which annually honors a graduating senior who excels not only in golf, but also in the classroom and community. He served as a lieutenant aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer from 2007 to 2009 while serving in the Persian Gulf to protect Iraqi oil platforms.
Kevin Streelman heads into the weekend just two strokes back of the lead. A two-time winner on TOUR, Streelman has come from behind in both his victories. (2013 Tampa Bay Championship, 2014 Travelers Championship)
At the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Streelman found himself T30 and six back after the second round. On the weekend he fired 63-65 over the final 36 holes and finished two strokes back on champion Ben Martin.
Streelman recorded one of three bogey-free rounds on Friday.
Last year Streelman carded a 71 in the third round of the CIMB Classic.
Defending champion Ryan Moore finds himself in a familiar place after 36 holes in Kuala Lumpur. Last year, Moore
was four-strokes back of Keegan Bradley after the second round. Moore posted a 69 in the third round to take the
outright 54-hole lead and would eventually defeat Gary Woodland in extra holes during a Monday finish.
This is Moore’s second start of the TOUR season. At his home event, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Moore missed the 36-hole cut for just the second time in nine starts.
The last player to successfully defend a title on TOUR is Tiger Woods at the Arnold Palmer Invitational (2012, 2013)
Ryan Moore
Defending champion Ryan Moore finished at 4-under-par after 18 holes. Moore, who defeated Gary Woodland on the first playoff hole to win the CIMB Classic in 2013, is looking to become the first player in tournament history to defend his title.
In 2013, Moore shot a course-record 63 in the opening round.
Moore birdied his final four holes of the day finishing on the front nine.
Kevin Chappell
Kevin Chappell fired a second-round 67 but assessed himself with a one-stroke penalty for incorrectly picking his ball up in the 16th fairway without first marking it. That hiccup dropped Chappell to into a tie for fourth, three back of Hurley.
In 116 previous starts on TOUR Chappell has finished runner-up twice (2011 Valero Texas Open, 2013 the Memorial
Tournament).
In the third round of the 2014 CIMB Classic, Chappell carded an even-par 72.
Sergio GarciaFor the second straight year Sergio Garcia has posted 7-under-par 137 through the first 36 holes of the CIMB Classic. Garcia is only three back heading into the third round.
Garcia has come from behind over the final 36 holes of all eight of his TOUR wins.
Last season Garcia finished runner-up in three straight starts on TOUR (Travelers Championship, The Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational).
Lee WestwoodWith a 20-degree hybrid from 226 yards Lee Westwood aced the par-3, 11th, en route to a bogey-free 65 on Friday. After starting the tournament three-over after his first five holes, Westwood has recorded seven birdies and two eagles.
Westwood looks to earn his second victory in Malaysia in the same calendar year this weekend. Earlier this season he won the Malaysia Open on the European Tour.
A two-time TOUR winner, Westwood’s last victory came at the 2010 FedEx St.Jude Classic.
Seung-Yul Noh
Seung-Yul Noh is making his first start of the 2014-15 PGA TOUR season this week in Kulala Lumpur. After a second-round 69 Noh is 7-under for the tournament, three back of the lead heading into the weekend.
At the 2014 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Noh was in a tie for third five strokes of the lead of Ben Martin after 36 holes. On Saturday Noh fired a 65 to jump into the lead by two. In the final round Noh posted a 71 to earn his first victory on TOUR.
Noh’s third-round scoring average is 66.00 in two previous starts in Malaysia.
Miscellaneous Stats
In addition to 500 FedExCup points and a two-year PGA TOUR exemption, the CIMB Classic champion receives invitations to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, a winners-only event in January, along with two major championships (Masters Tournament and PGA Championship) and THE PLAYERS. The player would also earn exemptions into six additional invitational events and a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR.
Graeme DeLaet withdrew after two holes of the first round on Thursday. DeLaet is still committed to play next week at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China. The plan for DeLaet is to stay in Kuala Lumpur for the remainder of the week and then fly to Shanghai on Monday.
Hideki Matsuyama recorded the first eagle on the par-5, 18th, in tournament history at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club on Friday afternoon. Matsuyama posted a second consecutive round of 70 and is 4-under through 36 holes.
Reigning FedExCup champion Billy Horschel started the second round at even par and fired a 4-under 68. Horschel sits at T18 heading into the third round. In 2012 Nick Watney was eight shots back heading into the weekend. Watney fired 65-61 over the final 36 holes to win by a single shot.
