Survey: Nine In 10 Malaysians Travelled Overseas Over Past Two Years

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- More Malaysians are travelling abroad with nine in 10 having taken overseas trips over the past two years, according to the 2015 Global Travel Intentions Survey.

This is a significant increase from the findings of the survey in 2013, in which 76 per cent of Malaysians travelled overseas in the past two years.

The study, commissioned by Visa, surveyed travel behaviours and preferences of 503 Malaysians and found Malaysian travellers taking an average of three leisure trips, slightly higher than the global average of two leisure trips.

A Visa statement said the destinations are within the region, particularly neigbouring countries, with Singapore the top destination among Malaysians, followed by Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Visa country manager for Malaysia Ng Kong Boon said the average length of trip by Malaysian travellers is seven days and the average spent is US$1,145 (RM4,921), lower than the regional or global average.

Malaysian tourists are also less inclined to go for high-end resorts and more likely to stay in 1-3 star hotels.
