Malindo has also received permission to fly
to Mumbai and a few South Indian destinations, but has not announced any plans
to start services.
Ng Yen Yen, chairman, Tourism Malaysia, said:
“India is Malaysia's second-largest tourism source market. We have seen a
significant rise in the number of Indian arrivals to Malaysia over the last
year with a total of 780,000 Indian tourist arrivals this year. With the
introduction of Malindo Air's new flight operations in India, we are expecting
a further increase of Indian visitors to Malaysia as connectivity seems to be a
key tourism driver.”
With Visit Malaysia Year 2014 being launched,
Malindo Air’s debut gives travel consultants hope in an Indian outbound market
plagued by the falling rupee.
Rajendra Churiwala, managing director,
Survottam Travel, commented: “The airline is also likely to fly to Kolkata,
Trivandrum, Chennai and Bangalore soon.”
He said that the new flights were likely to
be a hit in the market as clients would use Malindo not only for travel to
Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, but also to Singapore given Malindo’s price competitiveness
compared to airlines such as Singapore Airlines and SilkAir. “Moreover,
Air Asia X has stopped operations to Mumbai and New Delhi,” he added.
