NEW DELHI: A Malaysian food festival supported by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines opened Thursday night in this Indian capital city. Dubbed Rasa Ria Malaysia, the 10-day festival is being held at the Le Meridien.
Speaking at the launch, Malaysian High Commissioner to India Datuk Tan Seng Sung said multi-racial Malaysia was blessed with the rich cuisines of the many ethnic groups in the country. "We are also blessed with a fusion of dishes that are not found in the original homeland (of some of the ethnic groups)," he said.
This was especially true in the case of the straits-born Chinese Baba Nyonya food, which is a blend of Malay, Indian and Chinese cooking unique to the Malay Archipelago, he added.
"This is made possible because of the numerous mixed marriages between the three main races of the straits settlements of Malacca and Penang which have contributed towards making the two cities Unesco world heritage sites," he said. Besides, there are also rich varieties of food from Sabah and Sarawak.
"Lest we forget, the Portuguese, Dutch and English have also landed on our shores. They, too, have contributed to the Malaysian food heritage," said Tan, adding that in the northern states, Malaysians had the benefit of enjoying the dishes of the Thais who had settled down in the country.
"This is what makes Malaysian cuisine unique and pertinent to the country's tourism punchline, 'Malaysia, Truly Asia'," he added.
