KUALA LUMPUR: Tour operators should offer food trails in Malaysian travel packages, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen. She said food had become an important tourism product for Malaysia, bringing in billions of ringgit every year.
“Last year, tourists spent RM9.7bil on food and beverages in this country. That's 17% of the overall tourist expenditure,” Dr Ng said after launching the Faboulous Food 2011 1Malaysia Restaurant Food Carnival and Cooking Competition here yesterday. She proposed that tour operators include popular Malaysian food destinations in their travel itineraries, besides the usual sightseeing activities.
Dr Ng said the Fabulous Food 2011 1Malaysia campaign from October to December would feature char koay teow, rendang and nasi briyani as its official dishes. Last year's official dishes were satay, chicken rice and roti canai. She said October would be used to promote fine dining through the Malaysian International Gourmet Festival while November will feature the Asean Heritage Food Trail with celebrity cook Chef Wan. Street food will be the theme for December.
The food carnival and cooking competition will be held at Putra World Trade Centre from Nov 18 to Nov 20 and admission is free.
