KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers can purchase flight tickets at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) fair without any worry of falling prey to any fly-by-night scams. Association president Datuk Khalid Harun said they have vetted all travel operators who will be participating in the fair. “We have worked with the Tourism Ministry to make sure all participants are licensed,,” he said after witnessing the launch of the Firefly MATTA Packages.
Last December, it was reported that 38 victims had taken a travel agent to the Consumer Claims Tribunal for cheating them of their money. They had purchased the packages at a travel fair last September but later found out that the agent did not have a licence to sell outbound (overseas) packages. Khalid said any travel agent caught cheating would be charged for the criminal offence and their licence revoked.
“It is also compulsory for all members to have travel insurance so customers could be compensated if the agents are not able to give them the special offers,” he said. He also estimated that 70,000 people would be coming to the MATTA fair next week and advised the people to take public transport as the response to the fair every year was overwhelming.
