Lutong can be a tourist attraction, says Dr Chan

Lutong could be developed into Miri’s next major tourist attraction due to the charm of its old town. “Tourists would be delighted to visit a more traditional part of the city. It would indeed be a breath of fresh air amongst the modern infrastructure,” Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan said during a visit to Lutong Bazaar yesterday. In this respect, he said the government would provide the infrastructure required by the town to become a tourism centre. Dr Chan believed that the growth of tourism in Lutong would help to stop the decline of business in the town.

“Cafe operators can run their cafe the traditional way by grinding coffee beans with a traditional hand grinder. It would indeed be an eye-opening for the public and tourists alike,” Dr Chan said. Touching on the cleanliness of Lutong river, Dr Chan said he would try to seek the help of Shell to clean up the river as well as to beautify two parks in the vicinity of the town. Lutong is about 20 minutes from Miri City and is where Shell built Malaysia’s first oil refinery.
