TANJONG KARANG, June 27 (Bernama) -- To give an international bite to the 'Eat Local Fruits' campaign, the agriculture and agro-based industry ministry wants to promote them to tourists upon arrival at local airports. The ministry was currently in discussion with Malaysia Airports Berhad to make this happen, minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar said last night. Earlier, he had attended the school-level 'Eat Local Fruits' campaign, in conjunction with a visit by Australian students at the Sungai Sireh Homestay here. The visit was organised by Selangor Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama).
Meanwhile, Noh said the ministry was mulling over setting up a centre in Johor Baharu where the public could not only buy fruits, but also relax and enjoy them. "Should the plan materialise, it would lure many visitors from Singapore, and I am confident tourists (in general) will return to Malaysia for our fruits," he said. Meanwhile, Selangor Fama director Rohizad Ridzwan said the 'Eat Local Frueat local fruits programme, jointly held with Sungai Sireh Homestay residents and local schools there, included eight exchange students from the Languarin Primary School in Melbourne, Australia. The students were accompanied by four teachers from Down Under. In the programme, Rohizad said students were briefed on local fruits, shown a demonstration on how to peel jackfruit and prepare a fruit cocktail, among others.
