Kenyan runner Thomas Muli received a medal and RM800 in cash as champion
of the Raintown Half Marathon from Datuk Mohammad Zahir
TAIPING, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Taiping has special uniqueness and attractions to hold prestigious events like the Raintown Half Marathon to draw visitors, said Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

He said the organising of such an event which attracted up to 4,000 participants could help boost tourism here and generate income for the local residents.

"The participants most probably come with their families and would spend on accommodation, shopping including for souvenirs, and on food and beverages.

"Such a situation is good for promoting Taiping as a tourist destination and boosting the local economy," he said at the closing of the Raintown Half Marathon at Dataran Warisan Taiping, here, today.

The text of his speech was read out by state Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid.

"Taiping has 23 tourism products for people to visit and 10 types of food that are iconic to the town," Nazri said.

He hoped that the Perak government and other tourism entities like Tourism Perak, Destination Perak and Tourism Malaysia Perak could give continuous support and assistance to the organising of exciting activities in Taipung.

The Raintown Half Marathon was divided into seven categories including the 21km men's open, which was won by Kenyan runner Thomas Muli who received a medal and RM800 in cash.

Called the KL Sky Tour and operated by Cempaka Helicopters in collaboration with the City Hall and the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau, the flights take off from a helipad at Tasik Titiwangsa.
The service was launched by Transport Ministry special adviser Tan Sri M. Kayveas and Deputy Federal Territories Minister Senator Datuk Loga Bala Mohan.
Among those who attended the launch were Cempaka Helicopters chairman Datuk Zakaria Abdul Rahman and executive director Datuk James Ashley Greaves.

The shortest ride lasts six minutes and includes all the iconic landmarks of Kuala Lumpur but there are also rides of 15, 30 and 45 minutes for those with greater spending power, the longest of which goes all the way to Genting Highlands and back.
Prices start from RM198 not including GST but a flight needs a minimum of three people.
Cempaka Helicopters is already operating aerial tours around Langkawi but there are plans to expand the network to cover more destinations in Peninsular Malaysia.

Travelers can now preview travel packages on offer at upcoming Matta Fair

KUALA LUMPUR: Travelers and adventure seekers can now have a preview of travel packages that will be offered during the upcoming Matta Fair.

Over 450 packages from up to 100 travel agents would be catalogued online, on www.matta.travel, provided by Smart Online Travel Assistant (Sota).

Sota CEO Joanna Liao said the site allows travelers to look at what is on offer during the Matta Fair, which would be held from Sept 2-4 at the Putra World Trade Centre.

"The site also allows smaller agents to offer unique and niche packages like caving, traveling to Uzbekistan or Boracay. "Such niche packages would be harder to find at the actual fair itself so the site makes it easier for travelers to target their desired travel packages and purchase them at the Matta Fair," she said at a recent press conference.

Liao said that while browsing through the travel packages, consumers could email participating agents directly to request for more information or to make requests for customised packages.

"By bringing together multiple agents onto a single online platform, consumers benefit from the ability to access a wider variety of travel packages whilst having the assurance that they are dealing with legitimate and licensed travel agents."

Matta chief executive officer (CEO) Phua Tai Neng said all packages on the website are offered by tour agencies that were registered under the Tourism and Culture Ministry. "So there isn't any worry of fraud," he added. He also said they were expecting more than 100,000 visitors with a total sales of RM200 million.

Also present at the press conference were Matta secretary-general Nigel Wong, Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd (TAR&H) chief marketing officer Philip Whittaker and Legoland Malaysia marketing director Thila Munusamy. Meanwhile, Whittaker said TAR&H would be offering up to 40 per cent discounts on tickets and passes for Puteri Harbour indoor attractions in Johor and KidZania in Kuala Lumpur.

Also in conjunction with the Matta Fair, families can enjoy discounted rates at Legoland Malaysia Resort of up to 40 per cent off on the family package and in anticipation of the park's latest attraction, Lego Ninjago: The Ride. "The package includes accommodation at Legoland Hotel, buffet breakfast and two days combo tickets for five people. "We also have up to 35 per cent discount on annual passes, giving visitors unlimited entries for 12 months," she said.

Solid Sixth For Kornfeil At Home Grand Prix

Brno, Czech Republic– Sunday 21st August

Circuit: Automotodrom Brno
Circuit Length: 5.4 km
As the rain clouds descended upon the Automotodrom Brno, DRIVE M7 SIC Racing Team rider Jakub Kornfeil concluded his Home Grand Prix with a solid 6th place finish.
Adding more valuable points to his Championship position, the 23-year-old retains 10th place overall.
Following a superb Warm Up that saw Adam Norrodin finish the first wet practice of the weekend in 7th place, the Malaysian rookie began the 19 lap race with high hopes.
Despite making a good start off the line, Norrodin found himself being reined in on the opening lap, sending him back down the field to 22nd place. Working hard, the 18-year-old looked to have found his rhythm as he battled his way back through the field to 16th place, until an unfortunate mistake at turn ten saw the Malaysian rider crash out.
Johan Stigefelt – Team Manager
“It was a difficult race today; in these conditions it’s very hard to keep the concentration all the way through. Jakub made a good start and pushed very well at the beginning. He was in the front and up to P2 but he said it was very difficult to keep the speed and lap times consistent. The group behind caught him and he tried to hold them off as much as he could; he did a good job. Finishing top six in these conditions is very good, so we are pleased. Adam had a great warm up this morning, so we had high hopes for him in the race. Unfortunately he made another mistake in the wet and crashed out. This is not good and I’m not happy with it of course but Adam is OK, he’s not hurt and that’s the most important thing. He did a good qualifying in the dry yesterday and he has definitely made progress this weekend, so we just have to look forward now and keep moving in the right direction.”
#84 Jakub Kornfeil: P6
“I feel okay after the race; I hope that I made the Czech supporters happy because that is the most important thing to me here. From the beginning of the race for sure it looked like we could possibly take a podium; I wanted to go as fast as possible from the beginning to break away and take an advantage. Unfortunately there were many riders still right behind me. I did my best but I couldn’t go any faster. In the end, around the last six laps, there was a lot more surface water on track and the wet tyres were starting to lose their grip. This combination was not good for me and from one lap to another I went three seconds slower and this was the big problem with today’s race. Nevertheless I have to say thanks to the team for the great bike. Sixth position is good for us because we leave Brno with more points for the Championship.”
#7 Adam Norrodin: DNF
“From the beginning of the race I felt really confident because we had such a good warm up. I made a good start off the line but then other riders were passing me on the straight, so I dropped back to P22 on the first lap. I knew I had to hurry up and catch the front group. I started to catch the riders in front and one by one I managed to work my way up to P16. The rider in front of me was pushing hard to make a good lap time to catch the group in front, so I decided to just stay behind him and make a good rhythm the same as him; I didn’t want to start fighting and lose the group ahead. It was working but then in turn ten I tried to close the gap a lot more and crashed. I didn’t expect it at all because I was riding so smooth but the rear wheel just slid right round and I high-sided. I’m sorry to the team and my mechanics for this race. I will come back stronger.”
