SEPANG: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) expects the 57th National MATTA Fair to generate over RM250mil in sales following rising regional travel demand and the government’s push for Visit Malaysia 2026.

MATTA president Nigel Wong said the fair, the country’s largest consumer travel showcase, is now fully subscribed, as it expects to draw up to 150,000 visitors.

“We are more optimistic this year because of the government’s push for Visit Malaysia 2026 and a renewed interest in Asean travel,” he said at a press conference for the travel fair here yesterday, where the Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) was named as Official Airline Partner.

“Visitors will also notice many new products and attractions being introduced at this edition,” Wong said of the event that will take place from Sept 5 to 7 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

The fair’s 2,040 booths will take up a combined floor area of 3,800sqm, making it one of the largest editions to date.

Following the launch of the MATTA Eco and Sustainable Tourism Initiative (Mesti) in April, the September edition will feature the largest-ever Mesti Pavilion to promote responsible tourism, environmental stewardship and cultural preservation.

“Travel is about connecting people and places. With the support of the Malaysia Aviation Group as our premier sponsor, we have a partner that understands the importance of safeguarding these connections for future generations,” said Wong.

MAG chief commercial officer of airlines Dersenish Aresandiran said the partnership will help strengthen the group’s share of both outbound and inbound markets while supporting the country’s broader tourism agenda.

“Outbound travel continues to show strong double-digit growth, and inbound demand is also rising.

“There will be future-forward products and interactive showcases featuring Malaysia Airlines and Firefly’s extensive networks.

“Visitors can also experience a first-of-its-kind AI-powered travel showcase, giving a glimpse into how technology can redefine the way we plan our trips,” he said.

Dersenish added that MAG would continue its tradition of engaging football fans with meet-and-greet sessions featuring Manchester United legends.

“This year’s line-up will include players from their championship-winning era, and fans from abroad have even travelled to Kuala Lumpur just for this experience,” he said.

In addition, Malaysia Airlines will offer up to 30% off fares across its global network for both economy and business class, while Firefly will introduce all-in return fares starting from RM59.

Ancillary products such as extra baggage, seat selection and lounge access will also be discounted by 20%.

Enrich loyalty programme members will enjoy additional privileges, including early access to sales, a further 5% discount and bonus points.

Instant rewards and redemption gifts will also be offered for bookings made during the fair, alongside buyers’ contest prizes such as business and economy class tickets to Paris, Tokyo, Auckland, Perth, London and South Korea.

Dersenish added that MAG’s booths will showcase a futuristic travel concept, reflecting its ambition to be among the world’s top 10 airlines by 2030.

“This fair is about more than discounts. It is about sharing our vision for a digital, AI-powered and sustainable travel experience, while supporting the Visit Malaysia 2026 target,” he said at the event that was also attended by MATTA exco for special functions Datuk Hamzah Rahmat, MATTA vice-president of air transportation Dr Fazil Khan, MAG head of airlines global sales Syazwan Ahmad Sabri and MAG head of airlines global marketing Emily Tan.

To ensure smooth access, MATTA has arranged 24 free shuttle buses running between KL Sentral, Sunway Putra Mall and MITEC at intervals of five to 10 minutes.

Admission to the MATTA Fair is free, with opening hours from 10am to 9pm daily, with more information at mattafair.org.my or on MATTA’s official social media channels.

Langkawi records 1.5 million tourists in second quarter

LANGKAWI: Langkawi's tourism sector continues to chart encouraging growth, with tourist arrivals surpassing 1.5 million in the first six months of the year.

Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) chief executive officer Datuk Seri Iskandar Mohd Kaus said as of June 30, the island recorded 1,525,953 tourist arrivals, representing 43.6 per cent of its 3.5 million target for 2024.

"Of this figure, 1,325,225 were domestic visitors, while 200,728 were international tourists, mainly from India, China, the United Kingdom, Poland and Russia.

"We are confident the number will rise significantly by December," he told reporters after the handover of Kampung Angkat Madani Phase 1 allocation at Masjid Ar-Rahman, Kampung Kedawang, yesterday.

Iskandar said the third and fourth quarters are expected to record even higher arrivals, fuelled by major events such as Ironman Malaysia Langkawi and the Langkawi Writers Festival.

"In addition, Lada, together with Malaysian Aviation Group (MAG), has launched the Langkawi Special Deals programme, offering attractive packages with discounts ranging from 20 to 70 per cent," he said.

On KAM, Iskandar said Kampung Gelam in Kedawang has received RM1 million for various community development projects this year.

Among the allocations, Masjid Ar-Rahman received RM635,000 for the construction of an open hall, perimeter fencing and roof upgrades.

SK Kedawang was allocated RM50,000 for student waiting facilities, while SMK Kedawang received RM65,000 to improve its parking area.

"In total, the Federal Government channelled RM700,000 in the first phase for mosque and school facilities in the area. We hope these projects will bring tangible benefits to the local community," he said.

New Gateway To Malaysia: Jiangxi Air Inaugurates First International Route From Nanchang

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 AUGUST 2025 – Tourism Malaysia proudly welcomes Jiangxi Air, a rising low-cost carrier jointly established by Xiamen Air and the Jiangxi Provincial Government, on the successful launch of its inaugural direct service between Nanchang and Kuala Lumpur.

Today’s landmark Flight RY6607 touched down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), marking the historic arrival of the first-ever direct flight connecting Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, with Malaysia’s bustling capital city. This milestone not only enhances air connectivity but also strengthens tourism, trade, and investment linkages between Malaysia and China’s eastern region.

The inaugural ceremony was officiated by Mr. Chua Choon Hwa, Deputy Secretary General (Tourism) and YBhg. Dato’ Normah Osman, Deputy Secretary General (Policy) of Ministry of Transport. Distinguished guests included Mr. Samuel Lee, Deputy Director General (Promotion II), Tourism Malaysia. Also present were Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and Mr. Kang Zhiyang, General Manager of Jiangxi Air.

“This new air link is a testament to the strong and ever-growing tourism ties between Malaysia and China. It not only enhances connectivity but also supports our continuous efforts to position Malaysia as a premier travel destination in the region. We look forward to welcoming more Chinese visitors to experience Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse offerings,” said YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

The Nanchang–Kuala Lumpur service represents a historic milestone as Jiangxi Air’s firstever international scheduled route. Choosing Malaysia as its maiden overseas destination reflects the airline’s strong confidence in Malaysia’s tourism appeal and underscores Malaysia’s role as a strategic gateway to Southeast Asia.

Jiangxi Air will operate twice-weekly flights between Nanchang Changbei International Airport and KLIA Terminal 1, utilizing its modern Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 175 seats. This convenient service is set to boost business travel, leisure tourism, and peopleto-people exchanges, while creating greater economic opportunities for both nations.

From January to June 2025, Malaysia welcomed 2.17 million visitors from China, an impressive 35.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This remarkable growth highlights the rising demand for Malaysian destinations among Chinese travellers. The newly launched Nanchang–Kuala Lumpur route is expected to further accelerate arrivals, particularly from the Jiangxi region.

Tourism Malaysia remains committed to strengthening global air connectivity by working closely with international carriers, airport authorities, and tourism industry stakeholders. This collaboration supports Malaysia’s vision to enhance its global tourism presence and solidify its position as a world-class travel hub ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

PETALING JAYA, 22 August 2025: Tourism Malaysia, in strategic partnership with Star Media Group Berhad (SMG), today launched the Star Karnival Cuti-Cuti Malaysia 2025, a nationwide domestic tourism activation designed to promote local travel, celebrate Malaysia’s culture, and galvanise the nation towards Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

Held at the Cybertorium, Menara Star, the launch event was attended by YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, tourism stakeholders, industry players, and media, marking a milestone collaboration between the public and private sectors to re-energise Malaysia’s tourism landscape.

The Star Karnival Cuti-Cuti Malaysia series will take place across five states — Pahang, Sabah,Sarawak, Penang, and Johor. It is expected to engage more than 200,000 Malaysians through vibrant showcases of local attractions, cultural performances, travel deals, and destination experiences.

As part of the Star Karnival Cuti-Cuti Malaysia 2025 tour, The Great Outdoor Expo will also return from 3 to 5 October 2025 at MAEPS Serdang. Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, said, “Domestic tourism has always been the backbone of our industry, and as we gear up for VM2026, it is crucial that Malaysians themselves become our most passionate ambassadors. This strategic collaboration with SMG is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships. Indeed, Star Karnival Cuti- Cuti Malaysia is not just a travel fair; it’s a platform to bring exciting travel deals, tourism products, local handicrafts, a taste of heritage food, and cultural showcases directly to people, making it easier for everyone to rediscover the beauty and pride of our homeland.”

Mr Chan Seng Fatt, Group Chief Executive Officer of Star Media Group, spoke on the role of media in driving domestic tourism, “We are standing at the starting line of a journey that is as much about rediscovery as it is about celebration. This is a journey that invites us to look at Malaysia not just as our home, but as a treasure trove waiting to be explored anew. With the Star Karnival Cuti-Cuti Malaysia and The Great Outdoor Expo, we’re doing more than launching events — we’re inspiring Malaysians to see our land through fresh eyes, reconnect with our heritage, and embrace the beauty that surrounds us.”

Members of the public are invited to attend the events to explore, engage, and experience the richness in our backyard. The carnival will feature local crafts and tourism booths, cultural showcases and traditional performances, travel deals, flash sales and giveaways, family-friendly attractions and food fairs, as well as outdoor and eco-tourism promotions.

Tourist arrivals to Malaysia up from China, Singapore, UK, Indonesia, India in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: International visitor arrivals to Malaysia from China increased by 35.6 per cent in the first half of this year, rising to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said that between January and June, Malaysia recorded an overall increase in international visitors.

He added that Singapore also saw a rise, with more than 10 million visitors this year compared to 8.4 million in 2024, a 22.5 per cent increase.

"Long-haul markets such as the United Kingdom performed well, with 215,813 visitors, a 9.5 per cent increase.

"Indonesia ranked second with 2,197,288 visitors in 2025, an 8.2 per cent increase from 2,031,111 in 2024.

"This was followed by Thailand, which saw 1,237,979 visitors this year, a 5.4 per cent increase from 1,174,818 last year, and India with 807,664 visitors, a 26.6 per cent increase from 638,109," he told the Dewan Rakyat while winding up the 13th Malaysia Plan today.

However, he added that visitor arrivals from Brunei declined to 747,851 in 2025 from 885,420 in 2024.

Tiong said promotional and advertising allocations are tailored to the potential and size of each market, rather than being focused on a single one.

"To ensure a positive impact, promotional activities are concentrated on digital and social media platforms, especially in high-potential markets," he added.

He said these promotional efforts require larger allocations in countries with high currency exchange rates.

Petrosains and Tourism Malaysia Sign Strategic MOC to Reimagine Visitor Experience Ahead Of Visit Malaysia 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 August 2025 - In a strategic move set to redefine Malaysia’s experiential tourism landscape, Petrosains Sdn. Bhd. formalised a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) with Tourism Malaysia at the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers on 15th August 2025 (Friday), marking a pivotal milestone in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

The MoC was signed by Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, Chief Executive Officer of Petrosains Sdn. Bhd., and Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Senior Director of Advertising & Digital, Tourism Malaysia, cum Head of Secretariat VM2026. The ceremony was witnessed by Nik Rosmanie Bt Nik Mohamad, Chairman of Petrosains Board of Directors and Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.

As Malaysia aims to welcome 43.0 million international visitors in 2025, this MoC represents a timely and strategic move to strengthen the role of Petrosains and the PETRONAS Twin Towers in the national tourism ecosystem.

By leveraging Petrosains’ unique position as both a science engagement institution and operator of two flagship destinations — Petrosains, The Discovery Centre and the PETRONAS Twin Towers Visit Experience — this partnership aims to reimagine visitor engagement through storytelling, education, and immersive design.

Chief Executive Officer of Petrosains, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, said: "As we gear up for VM2026, we look forward to working closely with Tourism Malaysia and all our valued partners to elevate both Petrosains and the PETRONAS Twin Towers as flagship tourist destinations, showcasing Malaysia’s uniqueness in modern attractions, innovation, and educational tourism."

He further added: "With a strong focus on modern attractions, scientific discovery, and experiential learning, we hope to support Tourism Malaysia as a compelling destination partner for both international and regional markets, offering not just leisure, but also knowledge, inspiration, and engagement."

The MoC outlines four key focus areas aimed at enhancing Malaysia’s positioning as a knowledge-based experiential destination. These include joint marketing and promotional initiatives such as co-branded campaigns, destination storytelling, and targeted outreach to amplify visibility across domestic and international markets. Both parties will also collaborate on the development and use of shared creative assets to ensure consistent visual identity across national tourism platforms. In addition, Petrosains and Tourism Malaysia will participate in key tourism events, ranging from international trade shows to familiarisation trips, and align digital and physical activations under the VM2026 umbrella to create seamless, high-impact touchpoints for travellers worldwide.

Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, Director General of Tourism Malaysia, said: “We are excited to forge strategic collaboration with Petrosains as it brings a unique blend of education, leisure, and operational excellence to enhance the global standing of the PETRONAS Twin Towers and Petrosains, The Discovery Centre.

“By combining Tourism Malaysia’s extensive international network with Petrosains’ expertise in science and storytelling, we are transforming our iconic landmark, the PETRONAS Twin Towers, into a world-class experiential hub. This is also in line with our VM2026 campaign strategy to offer visitors more than just a destination, but an unforgettable, surreal experience.”

In conjunction with the MoC signing, Petrosains also unveiled a new brand identity for the PETRONAS Twin Towers Visit Experience - now officially named the PETRONAS Twin Towers Sky Xperience (PeTT SkyX), with the tagline of “Heart of A Nation. Peak of Your Journey.”

The rebrand reflects a refreshed visitor journey, combining Malaysia’s architectural prowess and cultural pride with immersive, world-class experiences. The enhanced experience includes:

• Sky Bridge @ Level 41 – The world’s tallest double-decked bridge, offering breathtaking views of Kuala Lumpur and KLCC Park.

• Sky Deck @ Level 86 – Panoramic city vistas, complemented by interactive displays detailing the design and symbolism of the towers.

• Level 83 Highlights – A personalised postcard service from the Sky Deck and exclusive souvenir shops known as Sky Shop at Level 83 and Concourse.

• Coming Soon: Sky Café @ Level 83 – A scenic space to relax and enjoy the city skyline.

As the social impact arm of PETRONAS in democratising STEM education for all, Petrosains manages the visit operations for both Petrosains, The Discovery Centre and the PETRONAS Twin Towers, two of the nation’s most iconic and meaningful destinations. As of July 2025, Petrosains, The Discovery Centre has welcomed over 9 million visitors since opening its doors in 1999, while the PETRONAS Twin Towers have drawn more than 8 million visitors since 2002.

In another significant milestone, the PETRONAS Twin Towers have officially become the 54th member of the World Federation of Great Towers (WFGT), joining a prestigious network of the world’s most celebrated high-rise landmarks. Standing at 451.9 metres, the Towers remain the tallest twin skyscrapers on Earth. Designed by renowned architect César Pelli, their iconic steel-and-glass façades draw on Islamic geometric motifs, symbolising Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage while reflecting its bold and modern spirit.
